JR East (JR東海) is preparing for the retirement of its beloved Doctor Yellow T4 Series, known as the "Shinkansen's doctor," with scheduled experiences to celebrate its service.
According to JR East, two special events will feature the T4 Series before its final test runs, which are expected to conclude in January 2025. Among the events are opportunities for fans to participate—50 lucky individuals will have the chance to ride aboard the famed train, and about 200 will be invited to clean the T4 Series, making the experience even more engaging.
Doctor Yellow has served as the Shinkansen electric track evaluating vehicle, committed to enhancing safety across the Tōkaidō Shinkansen line. While the train's schedule remains undisclosed, its mystique has made it exceptionally popular among rail enthusiasts. Many believe seeing the Doctor Yellow brings good luck, giving it the status of an auspicious entity within the railway community.
Event participation is expected to draw significant interest, as evidenced by previous occasions where 8,900 applications were submitted for just 50 slots during prior test ride opportunities—creating impressive odds of approximately 180:1.
The experience ride event is slated for January 24, 2025, and the cleaning activity will occur shortly after on February 1, 2025. Interested participants can submit their application forms until December 18 for the ride event and from December 16 to 22 for the cleaning event.
This training and cleaning engagement serves not only as a send-off for the T4 Series but conveys gratitude to the legion of fans who have cherished the Doctor Yellow throughout its operational years. The remarkable connection between the train and its enthusiastic followers encapsulates the role of the Doctor Yellow not merely as machinery but as part of Japan's railway culture.
JR East representatives state, "体験乗車イベントには50名、「おそうじ体験イベント」には約200名が参加することができます。" This is just part of how they intend to honor the legacy of the Doctor Yellow.
With its affectionately termed role as the "doctor" of the Shinkansen, the Doctor Yellow has remained pivotal to ensuring passenger safety and maintaining the trains' operational integrity along one of the world’s busiest rail corridors.
