From February 1, 2024, JR East will implement the use of protective glasses for its station employees and train operators across the Shinkansen and conventional rail lines. This initiative is aimed at enhancing safety during platform checks and improving the overall well-being of staff.
This rollout follows successful trials conducted since early 2023, where the efficacy of the glasses had already been confirmed. Employees reported significant benefits, particularly when dealing with the harsh glare caused by sunlight or reflections from the surrounding environment.
The protective glasses utilize polarized lenses, ensuring they do not impede the ability to recognize signals. Instead, they are specially introduced to minimize exposure to dazzling light, thereby elevuating forward visibility and alleviating fatigue during long shifts.
Initially, the glasses will be provided to staff stationed at various locations where safety checks are conducted throughout the day. Specifically, JR East plans to equip ten conventional railway stations and seven Shinkansen stations with these protective devices.
One station employee, who participated in the pilot phase, expressed relief, stating, "The glare reduction has helped with concentration," emphasizing how the glasses make it easier to focus on safety tasks.
Another employee noted the necessity of such eyewear during difficult weather conditions, particularly stating, "The glasses were effective during snowy conditions due to sunlight glare," highlighting their practical benefits.
According to JR East, the decision to fully implement the protective eyewear stems not only from the positive feedback but also from the company's commitment to continuously improve the working conditions of its employees. The protective eyewear is available to approximately 2600 employees, who can choose between clip-on models and over-glass types.
