Joselu Reflects On Career Success And Challenges On El Hormiguero

The Spanish forward discusses triumphs, personal struggles, and life in Qatar during his debut on the show.

José Luis Mato, known as Joselu, made his debut appearance on the popular Spanish show 'El Hormiguero,' bringing with him tales of triumph and personal reflections. The 34-year-old forward, who achieved remarkable success with Spain at the UEFA Euro 2024, shared anecdotes about his career, including his time at Real Madrid and the emotional challenges he faced.

During the interview, Joselu expressed his gratitude to Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, stating, "He has been very important to me". His relationship with Pérez has been significant throughout his career, particularly during his early days with the club. Joselu’s reverence for Pérez reflects the deep connection many players feel for their clubs, especially those who have achieved as much as he has.

Transitioning to life in Doha, where he currently plays for Al-Gharafa S.C., Joselu spoke about his adaptation to life there. "Life is very good here," he said, highlighting the family-friendly atmosphere and quality schools available for his children. He shared how his family is thriving, overcoming initial difficulties with the climate and culture. Joselu described his daily routine, illustrating how comfortably he has settled after moving from Europe.

Reflecting on his illustrious past, Joselu recounted his significant moments with Real Madrid, including his double goal performance during the Champions League semifinals against Bayern Munich, leading to the final against Borussia Dortmund. "A level football, it is the best day of my life," he said, underlining the exhilaration of scoring those decisive goals and the fervor of the fans at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.

His relationship with Real Madrid is complicated, as he revealed the emotional toll of leaving the club after contributing to their numerous victories, including La Liga and the Champions League. Joselu candidly commented, "It was one of the hardest moments of my career." His departure stemmed from the club's strategic acquisitions of players like Kylian Mbappé and Endrick, which reduced his chances of playing. Nonetheless, he expressed contentment with his decision, stating, "I'm happy for taking the decision because I left at the best moment."

During the interview, the star striker exuded pride when discussing Spain's success during international tournaments. He emphasized the importance of team chemistry, mentioning how blending young talents with experienced players played a pivotal role. "It was key to mix the young and the veterans," he noted, crediting coach Luis de la Fuente for fostering camaraderie among the players.

Joselu also shared lighter moments from the national team, including anecdotes about team fines for tardiness. "If we were late by even one minute, we had to pay one thousand euros. The young players joked they would avoid paying by winning the Euro," he chuckled.

Personal challenges are another facet of Joselu's life story. The loss of his grandmother to suicide and the subsequent death of his grandfather from grief during his early career marked him deeply. He credited his wife, Melanie Cañizares, for her unwavering support during the lows of his life, saying, "My career is shared with my wife." They have been together for over 12 years and have two children, with Melanie being particularly impactful during his toughest times.

The couple shares mutual interests, and Joselu often showcases their bond, which resonates with their followers on social media.

Joselu’s football career, which began at Celta de Vigo’s youth team, is marked by numerous challenges and triumphs across Europe. He recalled being scouted by Real Madrid after impressive performances at Celta, saying, "It was such motivation to reach the first team." After years with various clubs, including stints at Hoffenheim, Stoke City, and New Castle, his return to Real Madrid last season was significant. Despite facing competition, he became known as the 'hero' of the team for his pivotal goals.

His achievements, including winning the UEFA Nations League and Euro 2024 with Spain, remain at the forefront of his narrative. "It was such joy when I learned my teammates would be playing here for the championship," he remarked, fondly recalling his experience training with the current squad.

Towards the end of the episode, Joselu emphasized the dedication and pressure footballers experience behind the scenes. He humorously declared, "We suffer more than what we earn," highlighting the intense scrutiny athletes face, beyond the public perception of their lucrative contracts.

Through the conversation, Joselu emerged as not only a talented player but also as someone who has experienced significant personal growth through both his challenges and victories. His ability to share these experiences on such platforms as 'El Hormiguero' resonates with fans, shedding light on the person behind the athlete.

Overall, Joselu's visit to 'El Hormiguero' was enlightening, allowing fans to connect with him on another level. His career is not just about the accolades but also the trials and tribulations he has faced along the way, marking him as one of football's compelling characters today.
