José Juan Macías Departs Santos Laguna After Contract Termination

The 25-year-old striker's battle with injuries leads to early exit from the team.

José Juan Macías has officially parted ways with Club Santos Laguna, as confirmed by the team through a statement on February 11, 2025. The 25-year-old forward joined Santos in the summer of 2024, aiming to make his mark during the Apertura 2024 tournament. Unfortunately, his time with the club has been marred by injuries, resulting in just three appearances and one goal over 57 minutes of game time.

The club's announcement emphasized, "Club Santos Laguna informs the early conclusion of the contract with player José Juan Macías. The forward wore the green and white jersey from the Apertura 2024 to the present Clausura 2025. The Club thanks José Juan for his work and wishes him success in his professional future." This statement highlights the mutual agreement between Macías and the club to terminate the contract due to the player's inability to stay fit.

Macías, who has battled injuries throughout his career, initially gained recognition with Chivas and León. Despite his potential, injuries kept rearing their heads, adversely affecting his playing time and performance. He had previously suffered significant setbacks including ligament tears which had already interrupted his presence on the pitch. Upon joining Santos, fans hoped he would rediscover his form, but the reality has been unfortunately different.

During his stint, Macías struggled with rehabilitation after undergoing surgery for meniscus damage to his right knee. His return to action saw another setback when he aggravated his condition, sustaining yet another injury—this time, he faced trouble with the biceps femoris muscle of his left thigh.

The tipping point came during matchday 2 of the Clausura 2025 tournament, where Santos faced Pachuca. Macías exited the game again with injury, which proved pivotal for management as they had to evaluate his contribution to the team amid his continuing physical woes.

"The situation with José Juan Macías, who has had several injuries throughout his career, led to the decision of the Santos management to conclude the contract early," stated ESPN. The management had clearly considered the player's history of injuries before deciding to move forward without him.

Macías made a notable contribution during the Apertura 2024 tournament. He scored his first and only goal with the club but participated only once across the entirety of the tournament. His limited minutes boiled down to 13 during his debut game, which paints a dire picture of his time at Santos.

Despite being highly regarded for his talent, injuries have plagued his career. Prior to his arrival at Santos, he also faced difficulties during his time with Chivas and later, Getafe, where he struggled to make his hoped-for impact. Following the premature termination of his contract, he finds himself as a free agent, facing uncertainty about his future.

Currently, Santos Laguna is grappling with their own challenges, as they sit at the bottom of the Clausura 2025 standings. The team has been struggling to find their footing, and Macías' inability to contribute has only compounded their difficulties. While his absence may open space for others, it also reflects broader issues within the club's management and strategy.

Now, as José Juan Macías seeks new opportunities, the focus shifts to what lies next for him. Will he find another club willing to take the risk on his talents? Or perhaps he might need to reconsider the path going forward as he navigates the turbulent waters of professional football? One thing is certain; for Macías, the fight to return to the game he loves continues.
