In a significant move towards enhancing Jordan's energy sector, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh confirmed the progress of a three-dimensional seismic survey project in the Al-Jafr area, located in Ma'an Governorate. This project, which is being executed by the Arab Potash Company (APC), a subsidiary of Saudi Arabian Mining Investments, is viewed as a crucial step in the search for oil and natural resources.
During a site visit on April 19, 2025, Dr. Al-Kharabsheh emphasized the project's importance, stating that it serves as a fundamental pillar in efforts to explore oil and natural resources, potentially leading to positive economic impacts for Jordan. He noted that the project aligns with the goals of the country's modern economic reform initiatives, aiming to increase reliance on local energy sources.
"The three-dimensional seismic survey project is a key step in oil exploration," Al-Kharabsheh remarked, highlighting the use of advanced seismic technologies that set this initiative apart from previous projects in the field. The current phase of the project focuses on gathering and analyzing geological data, which will ultimately inform the next steps in the exploration process.
The seismic survey will cover an extensive area of approximately 4,285 square kilometers. According to the Ministry of Energy, the total cost of the project is estimated at 22 million dinars, and it is expected to take around eight months to complete.
Results from the survey are anticipated within 24 months, after which the area will be presented as an investment opportunity for specialized companies in the oil exploration sector. Bahjat Al-Adwan, the director of petroleum and strategic minerals at the ministry, indicated that the project is not only a step towards energy independence but also a means to create job opportunities for local residents.
"This project will provide approximately 400 job opportunities, primarily for the residents of Al-Jafr," Al-Adwan stated. He further explained that this initiative aligns with the ministry's strategy of enhancing reliance on local energy sources, which is also reflected in ongoing projects in the Hamza and Sarhan fields.
