LINCOLN, Neb. — Significant changes are coming to the Nebraska volleyball program as Jordan Larson, a notable figure both as a player and coach, announced her decision to step away from her role as assistant coach. Head coach John Cook confirmed the news on January 27, 2025, expressing mixed feelings about Larson's departure after two highly successful seasons.
"Following the season, Jordan Larson informed me she has decided to move on from being part of our coaching staff. While I am disappointed we won’t have her on staff anymore, I am thankful to Jordan for all she has done for our program over the past two seasons," Cook stated. During her time with the Huskers, Larson helped lead the team to an impressive 66-5 record, as well as appearances in the NCAA Final and Semifinals, truly marking her impact during her coaching stint.
The transition was not without challenges for Larson, who managed to balance her coaching responsibilities with her commitments to the U.S. Women’s National Team and her professional volleyball career. "It wasn’t easy for her to balance the Olympics and a professional playing career, but she gave everything she had to our players and to the Nebraska volleyball program, and she will be missed," Cook added, acknowledging the dedication Larson displayed throughout her tenure.
Larson's connection with Nebraska volleyball runs deep. From 2005 to 2008, she played for the Huskers, leading them to significant national achievements, including three national semifinal appearances and the coveted National Championship title in 2006. During her senior season, she earned prestigious honors as both the Big 12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, evidencing her talent and leadership on the court.
Notably, Larson has enjoyed tremendous success on the international stage, representing Team USA since 2009. She has garnered numerous accolades over the years, culminating in her captainship of the team to secure the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held last year. Now, she is set to contribute her talents to the League One Volleyball (LOVB) Omaha, where she has made quite the impression since joining. Larson has helped her new team to start the season with a solid 3-1 record, showcasing her skills as one of the league's standout players.
Reflecting on her career shift, Coach Cook expressed positive sentiments for Larson’s future endeavors: "It has been fun watching Jordan begin her LOVB Omaha career, and we hope she has a great season." Although Larson's departure will undoubtedly leave a void within the Nebraska volleyball coaching staff, her legacy of excellence and impact on the program will remain indelible.
With Larson moving on to focus on her professional playing career, the Nebraska volleyball program is left to ponder its next steps. The program is deeply grateful to Larson for her contributions and will continue to build on the foundation she helped establish over the last two years. Her presence will surely be missed, but her influence remains etched in the hearts of players and fans alike.
