Jon Lewis Steps Down As England Women’s Cricket Coach

After leading England to historic wins, Jon Lewis resigns before World Cup.

England Women’s head coach Jon Lewis stepped down from his role on Friday, March 21, 2025, after a successful tenure marked by numerous accomplishments and a notable improvement in the team's performance.

Since taking over in November 2022, Lewis has been instrumental in leading the England Women’s team to 52 victories out of 73 games across various formats. Under his guidance, the England team currently holds the second position in the ICC ODI and T20I world rankings, trailing only Australia.

In the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 held in South Africa, England displayed commendable prowess, reaching the semi-finals. They narrowly missed out on a final four spot in the 2024 edition of the tournament, highlighting the improvement under Lewis's leadership.

A significant achievement during Lewis’s time was ensuring England’s qualification for the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in India, with the team finishing third in the Women’s Championship standings, just behind Australia and India. His tenure also saw the England team engaging in a thrilling multi-format series, where they drew the 2023 Women’s Ashes at home.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as England Women’s Head Coach,” Lewis commented, acknowledging the fulfillment he found in his role. However, he expressed concerns about his ability to continue, stating, “Unfortunately I won’t be able to finish this incredibly challenging but enjoyable job of developing this young team, whilst winning and growing the women’s game in this country.”

Lewis has been a big advocate for the girls in the team, working tirelessly to develop their skills and understanding of modern-day white-ball cricket. “In 2024, we won 83% of all our games,” he noted proudly. The emphasis on developing a younger squad was a crucial aspect of his coaching philosophy.

The boost in women's cricket interest during his tenure was evident, with Lewis highlighting, “I am proud that we have seen unprecedented bumper crowds in 2023 and 2024,” reflecting how his leadership contributed to growing the sport's visibility and popularity.

As his term ends, the England Cricket Board (ECB) is yet to name a successor for Jon Lewis, which raises questions about the future direction of the England Women’s team ahead of the upcoming Cricket World Cup. The team navigates a crucial juncture as it prepares for one of cricket's most significant events, aiming to build on the foundations laid during Lewis's leadership.

In the wake of his resignation, the statement from the ECB noted that a successor will be appointed as soon as possible, emphasizing the importance of maintaining momentum as the team gears up for the World Cup. The search for new leadership may significantly influence the trajectory of England Women’s cricket in the coming months.

As teams across the world prepare for the World Cup, England will undoubtedly look to build on the successes achieved over the past couple of years. Fans and players alike will be hopeful that the next head coach will continue the upward trend that Jon Lewis established.
