John McLean Dies Tragic Death After DUI Crash

Arizona Senate candidate lost life to drunk driving incident just days after election

On Friday morning, political circles were struck with disbelief and sorrow as news broke of the tragic death of Arizona Senate candidate John McLean. At 68, McLean, who had recently campaigned vigorously for the state Senate seat representing District 17, lost his life when his vehicle was involved in a collision caused by another driver suspected of driving under the influence.

According to the Tucson Police Department, the accident occurred around 6 AM near Broadway Boulevard and Houghton Road. McLean was at the wheel of his 2019 Toyota RAV4, making his way east on Broadway, when he was struck on the passenger side by a 2018 Ford Explorer. The Explorer, driven by 27-year-old Michael Martin Creel, allegedly ran a stop sign on Ridgeside Drive, leading to the catastrophic collision. Emergency responders pronounced McLean dead at the scene, shattering his family, friends, and supporters.

The driver of the other vehicle, Creel, was uninjured but was found to be impaired and speeding. Tucson Police arrested him on multiple charges, including aggravated DUI and manslaughter. Given his prior legal issues with DUI, which included convictions dating back to 2015, the consequences for Creel could be severe. Manslaughter, under Arizona law, is categorized as a class 2 felony, which could potentially result in a prison sentence of 7 to 21 years if convicted.

This incident marks yet another addition to the grim statistics surrounding road safety. McLean's tragic death was the 82nd fatality on Tucson streets this year alone, with the data highlighting the growing concern for traffic safety within the city.

McLean’s political aspirations were only getting started when he challenged incumbent Vince Leach, and the race had drawn increased interest as Democrats hoped to flip seats amid the political changes leading up to 2024 elections. Despite losing narrowly by about 3,000 votes, many regarded McLean as embodying the spirit of progressive values, passionate about serving the community. His loss leaves a palpable void not just among his family and friends but also within the local Democratic Party.

Tributes swiftly poured in following the announcement of his death. “My thoughts and prayers are with the McLean family for their tragic loss today,” said Leach, reflecting on McLean’s character and the impact he had on those around him. “John was a good man who conducted himself honorably as a candidate. The lives John positively touched during his life are incalculable.”

Those sentiments were echoed by other political figures. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs expressed her condolences, stating, “He always wanted to do what was best for his community, and he will be remembered for making such efforts.”

Born and raised in Phoenix, McLean held strong connections to the community. He graduated from the University of Arizona before pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of California. He returned to Tucson and dedicated decades to serving both his country and his community, having founded Areté Associates, a defense contractor involved in projects related to national security.

An ardent advocate for various local causes, McLean was actively involved with nonprofit organizations focused on education, environmental sustainability, and animal welfare. His deep-seated compassion for all creatures was evident through his work with local animal shelters which he claimed was incredibly fulfilling after discovering he had too little time to care for pets during his busy career.

McLean's friends and colleagues now reflect on the challenges he faced during his campaign—the hurdles typical for Democrats vying for positions within traditionally Republican strongholds. His candidacy signified growth and resilience, and many who knew him shared their hopes of seeing him succeed. The impact of his work, dedication, and kindness will be felt for years to come.

Senator Priya Sundareshan remarked on the loss: “I’m grieving the fact we've lost such a wonderful candidate and wonderful man. He remained engaged with the community and the causes dear to his heart, truly wanting to make the community he loved even greater.”

Despite the sorrow accompanying his departure, supporters of McLean have vowed to honor his legacy. The Arizona Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee articulated their feelings clearly, emphasizing McLean's direction toward leadership. They stated, “Running for public office was just one more way John McLean stepped up for his community. John always did the hard work of bringing people together to serve the common good.”

Through fundraising events, gatherings, and community engagement, McLean's supporters are determined to carry forward his vision for Arizona, ensuring his values resonate within the hearts of those he touched. Friends mentioned past days filled with laughter and hope as they canvassed neighborhoods and shared their plans for Arizona’s future. “He was focused on having an impact,” colleague Kevin Volk noted, sharing anecdotes from their time spent together during the campaign.

Indeed, John McLean's unexpected death serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictability of life. His advocacy, his empathy, and his dedication to the community will continue to inspire countless individuals inspired by his life. Amidst the heartache, supporters are urged to reflect on his infectious optimism and ways to keep his spirit alive, whether through continued activism or community service.
