John Legend shared the spotlight on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon recently, offering delightful updates about his four children with wife Chrissy Teigen. In a chat filled with proud parent moments, the 46-year-old hitmaker revealed that his daughter Luna, soon to be nine, has taken a starring role in her school's production of The Lion King. “Luna is 8. She’s in third grade. She'll be 9 very soon,” he told host Jimmy Fallon. “She’s doing musical theater at school. She’s playing Young Nala in The Lion King.
The news of Luna's impressive role was first shared by Teigen, 39, on December 4, 2024. Celebrating the occasion, Teigen surprised Luna with a giant balloon reveal hidden in the trunk of her car. “Luna got the part in The Lion King she wanted!! wasn’t gonna open the trunk if the outcome was different but YAYYYYYYYYYY!” Teigen joyfully announced over a video shared on her Instagram Stories.
But that’s not all. Legend also opened up about Luna’s evolving sense of style, indicating that she may have a future in fashion criticism. While chatting with Jenna Bush Hager on Today, Teigen remarked, “Luna doesn’t like anything I wear ever. She doesn’t like cleavage. She’s very modest.” Apparently, while Teigen usually embraces stylish outfits, Luna prefers a more masculine touch. “If she saw this, she’d be buttoning it up,” Teigen added humorously.
Legend also discussed his younger daughter Esti, who is currently two years old and is a huge fan of none other than John Cena. “Esti kind of went through a four-month phase where she was obsessed with John Cena dolls,” he shared with Fallon, mentioning that her birthday cake featured John Cena action figures. Legend confessed to being puzzled by the fascination, stating, “I don’t even know how she got into John Cena. I didn’t even know John Cena except from his movies.”
With a tone of disbelief and laughter, he continued, “I don’t know that she knows he’s real.” Legend even considered setting up a Cameo video from Cena to surprise Esti, although he found out that Cena isn’t on the Cameo platform.
The Legend-Teigen family landscape further includes six-year-old Miles, who will turn seven in May. “Miles is really into sports,” Legend said, mentioning the various activities their son participates in, including football, basketball, and baseball. “He’ll be 7 in May. So we play a lot of football, basketball, baseball in the backyard, and he’s on some of the teams at school. He’s a better athlete than I was,” Legend remarked, reflecting on his own childhood and athletic pursuits.
Preparing for parenthood has been a journey for the couple. Their eldest child, Luna, was born in April 2016, followed by Miles in May 2018. After a tragic pregnancy loss in 2020, the couple welcomed their daughter Esti Maxine in January 2023. Later that year, they expanded their family with son Wren Alexander Stephens, born via surrogate in June. In August 2023, Teigen shared the challenges of juggling the needs of her growing family. “For me, the hardest part is making sure the older ones feel loved and taken care of and just as special as the babies,” she explained to PEOPLE. “There’s a lot of diaper changing and feeding and it seems like you're coddling these two little babies and they’re not getting enough.”
Legend’s passion for family also found expression in artistry; he released a children’s album titled My Favorite Dream in August 2024. He stated, “I want our babies AND yours to find joy and inspiration and comfort from this music. I hope it helps them fall in love with music and helps them cope with all the worries and challenges they may have.” His commitment to his family, both in parenting and through music, reveals a heartwarming dimension behind his celebrity persona.
As Legend proudly updates the world on his children’s adventures, it’s abundantly clear that his life is enriched through their joys and challenges. The extraordinary roles each child plays, be it on stage or in sports, symbolize the family's vibrant dynamic.
