John Horgan Remembered For His Connection With People

Former B.C. premier and ambassador to Germany passes away after courageous battle with cancer

Former British Columbia Premier John Horgan has passed away at the age of 65, following his brave battle with cancer. He died peacefully at Victoria's Royal Jubilee Hospital, surrounded by his family, which includes his wife Ellie and their two sons, Evan and Nate. His family shared the news through social media, expressing their heartbreak over the loss of their beloved husband, father, and friend. They reflected on Horgan’s deep commitment to the well-being of British Columbia, concluding with the heartfelt words: “Live long and prosper,” echoing Horgan’s fondness for Star Trek.

Having served as premier from 2017 to 2022, Horgan was best known for revitalizing the provincial New Democratic Party (NDP) after nearly two decades of opposition. His tenure saw significant achievements such as abolishing medical service premiums and endorsing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. He rose to prominence through overcoming challenges and political strife, redefining what it meant to be accessible as a leader.

Diagnosed with cancer for the third time earlier this year, Horgan announced his departure from his diplomatic role as Canada’s ambassador to Germany this past June after being told he had thyroid cancer. Horgan had previously dealt with bladder cancer, becoming cancer-free after treatment in 2008. He battled throat cancer from 2021, which resurfaced, leading to more extensive treatment and hospital stays.

His political career began when he was first elected to the B.C. legislature representing Langford, where he served for nearly two decades. Horgan stepped up as the leader of the NDP during turbulent political times, successfully forming government through strategic alliances. The confidence and supply agreement with the Green Party allowed him to dethrone the BC Liberals, marking the dawn of his leadership.

“John Horgan believed deeply in the power of public service,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau remarked after Horgan’s passing, reflecting on his tireless advocacy and relentless spirit. Trudeau commended Horgan for his privilege and determination to help others, noting the dedication he brought to his leadership roles.

Horgan was known for fostering genuine connections with people, regardless of their political affiliation. Longtime NDP cabinet minister Mike Farnworth, who knew Horgan for over three decades, remembered him as remarkably relatable and easy to talk to, capable of enjoying casual beers with individuals from all walks of life.

Despite occasional controversies, including decisions around infrastructure and natural resource management, Horgan maintained significant public support throughout his career. Political scientist Hamish Telford observed, “Horgan left office more popular than when he was first elected,” attributing this to his pragmatic governance approach and relatability. He effectively balanced multiple challenges, guiding the province through the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters, such as catastrophic wildfires and flooding.

His ability to lead through uncharted waters often solidified his reputation as 'Premier Dad', highlighting not just his nurturing side but also his humor. Horgan was known for making light of serious situations, which endeared him to many. His spontaneous comments and actions during press conferences often transformed potentially awkward moments to endearing ones. For example, he once humorously commented on spilling water during a press briefing on the controversial Trans Mountain pipeline project.

Beyond politics, Horgan cherished his family and friends, emphasizing love and kindness as central to his character. Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto hailed Horgan as warm and genuine, with nuances of humor and connection deeply engrained. She described him as “a leader, dreamer, spouse, dad, and friend,” illustrating how Horgan’s personality permeated various layers of his life.

News of Horgan’s death triggered waves of tributes, as colleagues and political opponents alike recognized the impact he had during his time. Many underscored his contributions to the province, including his demand for social justice and his commitment to environmental issues. Glen Clark, another former B.C. Premier, highlighted Horgan's authenticity as the cornerstone of his leadership. Even those who had political disagreements with him acknowledged the difference he made.

Premier David Eby, who succeeded Horgan, announced plans for the flag at the Parliament Buildings to be flown at half-mast as tribute. He characterized Horgan as “a remarkable man” whose ability to engage with the public reshaped people’s perceptions of politicians. Eby noted Horgan’s remarkable transition of the NDP from being sidelined to being atop of the government during his leadership.

Horgan saw numerous successes as premier, but not without challenge. His decision to continue with the Site C dam, initially opposed, drew criticism among environmentalists. These complex multi-faceted challenges defined his leadership but never diminished his popularity or the affection many held for him.

John Horgan leaves behind not just memories, but legacies steeped with the ideals of community service and genuine connection. The loss of his spirited charm and approachability will be felt across British Columbia. His contributions to the community and the political sphere establish him as one of the province’s significant leaders, and his memory will undoubtedly live on within the province he cherished. Horgan’s warmth, tenacity, and humor are attributes fondly remembered by those who knew him personally and by the countless British Columbians whose lives he touched.
