BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- In a pivotal moment for Campbell University, assistant coach John Andrzejek has been named the new head coach of the Fighting Camels men's basketball team. The announcement was made on March 20, 2025, by Campbell's director of athletics Hannah Bazemore, who emphasized Andrzejek's potential in elevating the program.
Andrzejek, who has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Florida, played a significant role in the Gators' success. Under his guidance, Florida not only clinched its first Southeastern Conference championship since 2014 but also earned a coveted No. 1 seed in the 2025 NCAA tournament. Bazemore remarked, "John is one of the brightest rising stars in college basketball. His tireless work ethic, proven approach to the game, and ability to connect with student-athletes makes him the perfect leader to elevate our program to the next level." This makes him the sixth coach in Campbell's Division I history since its inception in the 1977-78 season.
Reflecting on the honor of his new position, Andrzejek stated, "It is an unbelievable honor to be named the head men's basketball coach at Campbell University. I'm extremely grateful to President Creed, Hannah Bazemore, and Justin Wilkins for allowing me this opportunity. I look forward to serving this institution and its visionary administration." Andrzejek added, "Campbell is a dynamic institution that's growing in tremendous ways, and I'm eager to be a part of our wonderful campus and community. I look forward to getting to work on bringing championships to The Creek. Roll Humps!"
Andrzejek's track record speaks volumes about his capabilities as a coach. Over the past two seasons, he has been integral in leading Florida to a remarkable overall record of 54-16, including a phenomenal 30-4 mark this season, a figure that ranks as the program's best since the 2013-14 season. The Gators also prided themselves on having the third-best scoring offense in the nation, averaging 85.4 points per game. The team also excelled in defense, boasting a top-15 ranking in opponent field goal percentage at 39.8.
Prior to his time at Florida, Andrzejek honed his coaching skills at Washington State University, where he served as an assistant coach for four seasons under Kyle Smith. His contributions helped secure several top-10 wins and laid the groundwork for future successes. He has also gained experience at Dartmouth and Johns Hopkins before taking on the role at Florida.
Recognized for his potential and expertise, Andrzejek was named to ESPN's 40 Under 40 list in 2020, becoming the youngest member of that prestigious group. He has also participated in the TopConnect program three times, designed to connect the nation's best assistant coaches in NCAA Division I college basketball.
Florida head coach Todd Golden praised Andrzejek's contributions, stating, "John has been an invaluable part of our staff since he arrived in Gainesville. He's proven to be an efficient worker, tireless recruiter, and a coach who is able to connect with the student-athletes. He's on his way to becoming a very successful head coach." Reflecting on Andrzejek’s influence, Golden highlighted his ability to connect with players, both on and off the court.
In his time at Florida, Andrzejek guided standout player Walter Clayton Jr., who achieved first-team All-America honors from all major outlets this year, marking a significant milestone for the program.
As Campbell University looks to the future, Andrzejek inherits a team coming off a season with a 15-17 record in the Colonial Athletic Association. While he takes on the challenge of reversing the Camels' fortune, Andrzejek's determination and proven leadership are expected to make an immediate impact.
Before embarking on his coaching career, Andrzejek was an exceptional student. He graduated in just two and a half years with a degree in philosophy from Columbia University, highlighting his dedication to academics as well as athletics. This academic achievement is complemented by his past experience as the team manager and director of basketball operations during his time at Columbia.
Engaged to his fiancé, Zule, Andrzejek is gearing up for their wedding planned for August 2025 as he takes on this new role at Campbell.
The upcoming season promises to be an exciting time for Campbell University, with Andrzejek at the helm and a supportive community ready to rally behind their new coach. As he steps into this new chapter, the Campbell Fighting Camels look forward to a bright future under Andrzejek's leadership.
