Johan-Olav Botn Wins IBU Cup Mass Start 60

The Norwegian biathlete secures victory with stellar performance at the Obertilliach event.

Johan-Olav Botn has emerged victorious at the IBU Cup Biathlon Mass Start 60, clinching first place during the thrilling race held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at Obertilliach, Austria.

The men’s 15km mass start saw Botn, from Norway, dominating with impressive agility and precision, completing the course with a remarkable time of 39:18.5. Despite missing four shots during the competition (2-1-0-1), his performance was enough to secure the win against fierce competition.

Following Botn across the finish line was fellow Norwegian Isak Frey, who finished just 10.7 seconds behind, registering three missed targets throughout the race (0-0-3-0). Johannes Dale-Skjevdal completed the podium sweep for Norway, securing third place with his time of +17.2 seconds over Botn, also hitting four missed targets (1-0-2-1).

The top five men’s results of the Mass Start 60 reflected Norway’s stronghold on the field, showcasing the depth of talent from the country. Sivert Guttorm Bakken rounded out the top four (+20.1) and Roman Rees of Germany finished fifth (+52.7), underlining the competitive nature of this biathlon event.

The IBU Cup event kicked off on Thursday, December 19, with sprint races enhancing the excitement leading to the mass start events. The schedule for the IBU Cup Obertilliach included additional events such as women’s mass start and mixed relays planned for the concluding days of the competition.

On December 21, the women competed in the 12km mass start, starting at 1:30 pm. Paula Botet from France opened the race, closely followed by teammates Camille Bened and Chloé Chevalier, adding another layer of competition for the audience. The women's race was equally competitive, with esteemed athletes showcasing their skills and strategies.

With the backdrop of the picturesque Obertilliach, the IBU Cup has drawn national biathletes from various countries, marking the significance of this event within the sport's calendar. After Obertilliach, the IBU Cup moves on to Germany at the Arber location, and the competitive biathlon season continues with stops planned at Brezno-Osrblie, Slovakia, and Italy before wrapping up the 2024/2025 season with events scheduled for Estonia.
