Joe Alwyn Opens Up About Moving On From Taylor Swift

After six years together, Alwyn reflects on their relationship and personal growth following their split.

Joe Alwyn, the British actor recognized for his roles and recent film The Brutalist, has opened up about the end of his six-year relationship with pop superstar Taylor Swift. The split, which reportedly occurred early this year, has continually attracted public attention, especially as Swift has since been linked with NFL star Travis Kelce.

During an interview with The Guardian, Alwyn was asked whether he felt the need to move on from his previous relationship with Swift more publicly. His response was both forthright and reflective. "That’s something for other people to do. We’re talking about something that's a whlie ago now in my life. So that's for other people. That’s what I feel,” he stated, indicating his readiness to move forward and his desire for others to do the same.

Alwyn emphasized his approach to dealing with the pressure and speculation of being in the public eye. He shared, "I have tried just to focus on controlling what I can control. And, right from the beginning, I've tried to focus on the things which are meaningful for me: friends, family, work, of course." This mantra seems to underline his efforts to navigate personal stakes against the backdrop of media scrutiny.

Reflecting on their relationship, which began quietly after they met at the 2016 Met Gala, Alwyn acknowledged how maintaining privacy was integral as he and Swift kept their romance largely under wraps. Nonetheless, their relationship was characterized by creativity; Alwyn contributed to Swift’s acclaimed albums Folklore and Evermore, composing songs under the pseudonym William Bowery.

When discussing his musical contributions, he recounted the unique experiences during stages of lockdown, describing it as having "a whole host of surprises," particularly noting the unexpected Grammy recognition they shared. “Lockdown was pretty special. That was not something I would have foreseen,” he recalled.

Alwyn’s reflections come as Swift publicly embraces new beginnings. Having moved on with Kelce, their budding romance has captured headlines, even as Swift offers hints about her past through some songs on her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department. Among fans, there has been speculation surrounding tracks potentially alluding to Alwyn, which has kept the public interested.

Commenting on the intersection of personal life and public perception, Alwyn conveyed the challenges associated with breaking up under the spotlight, explaining, “If you don’t, and if you let all of those other things affect you, you’re living from the outside in.” This perspective highlights the struggle many face when their private lives become fodder for public discourse.

Discussion of their breakup has brought forth reminders of just how real and invested partnerships can be, regardless of their conclusion. Alwyn noted, “There is always going to be a gap between what is known and what is said.” This sentiment resonates particularly within the entertainment industry, where fans may forget there are two human beings behind the headlines.

While Alwyn transitions through this phase of life, he is thoughtful about his well-being, focusing firmly on those whom he cherishes. “I have great family and friends and real things in my life; those things have kept me tethered to the ground,” he said, solidifying his determination to stay grounded.

Knowing the split is now behind him, Alwyn's renewed energy seems directed toward his professional aspirations. Emphasizing the importance of being true to oneself, he stated, “So noise outside of all of this, I think I’ve done what lots of people who find themselves in the public eye do, which is just try and ignore it.”

Alwyn appears to have struck a measured balance as he navigates his post-breakup life, showcasing resilience amid the public spotlight. His comments highlight both the complexity of moving on from substantial relationships and the necessity of insulating oneself from external judgments. While the split from Swift may have garnered headlines initially, Alwyn maintains it is time for others to recognize his narrative and embrace the next chapter of his life.
