J.J. Watt Joins CBS As NFL Game Analyst

The former Texans star will team with Ian Eagle for the 2025 season.

HOUSTON (KIAH) — J.J. Watt, the former Houston Texans legend, is set to step into a new role as a color analyst for NFL games on CBS starting in the 2025 season. Watt, who has made a name for himself as a formidable player on the field, will partner with play-by-play announcer Ian Eagle, forming the network’s No. 2 broadcasting team. This transition marks a significant move for Watt, who has spent the past two seasons working in the studio on CBS's pregame, halftime, and postgame show, The NFL Today.

Watt's excitement about returning to the stadium atmosphere is palpable. "There is nothing better than the energy and excitement of being in the stadium on game day in the NFL," Watt stated in a CBS Sports press release. "I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to return to that atmosphere each week, working with one of the best in Ian. While I certainly miss delivering hits on the field, it will be nice to leave the stadium without taking any, unless Ian decides to try something crazy."

Watt's journey to this new role has been marked by his impressive career in the NFL. He was drafted 11th overall by the Houston Texans in 2011 and spent ten seasons with the team before finishing his career with two seasons at the Arizona Cardinals. Over his 12-year career, Watt achieved remarkable success, totaling 120.5 sacks, including playoffs, and earning the title of AP Defensive Player of the Year three times in 2012, 2014, and 2015. His performance has made him one of the most decorated defensive players in NFL history, tying for the most Defensive Player of the Year awards in league history.

In addition to his on-field accolades, Watt was recognized for his contributions off the field, being named the 2017 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. His impact on the game and the community has been significant, and he was honored by the Texans in 2023 when he was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor, joining other legends like Andre Johnson and Bob McNair. Furthermore, his No. 99 jersey was retired, solidifying his legacy in Houston.

Watt's foray into broadcasting is not entirely new, as he made his debut in the booth during a Christmas Day game for Netflix in 2024, where he partnered with Ian Eagle and fellow commentator Nate Burleson. This experience sparked his interest in pursuing a full-time role in game analysis, and it seems to have paid off as he prepares for the upcoming season.

As Watt transitions into this new chapter, he will be taking over the role previously held by Charles Davis, who will move to college football in 2026, replacing Gary Danielson, who is set to retire after the 2025 season. Davis will remain part of the CBS NFL roster for the 2025 season as he makes this transition.

Watt's addition to CBS's NFL coverage is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the broadcast booth. CBS Sports President and CEO David Berson expressed his enthusiasm about Watt's new role, stating, "JJ is one of the greatest players in the history of the NFL, and a future Hall of Famer. Over the last two years – as a studio analyst and on social media – he's connected with fans through his passion, insight, and desire to truly have fun. We can't wait for him to now entertain viewers as a game analyst. Listening to JJ and Ian together each week will be a real treat for NFL fans."

Watt has maintained a high media profile since his retirement from the NFL, making regular appearances on popular sports-talk shows and engaging with fans through social media. His charisma and insight into the game are expected to resonate well with viewers, and many are eager to see how he adapts his knowledge of the game to the broadcasting format.

As the NFL season approaches, fans are looking forward to seeing how Watt's unique perspective will enhance the viewing experience. With his extensive knowledge of the game and his natural ability to connect with audiences, Watt is poised to make a significant impact in his new role.

In addition to his broadcasting career, Watt has also ventured into business. He and his wife, former U.S. soccer midfielder Kealia Watt, became investors in the Burnley Football Club in May 2025, further expanding his influence beyond the football field.

J.J. Watt's journey from a celebrated player to a promising broadcaster is a testament to his versatility and passion for the sport. As he prepares to call NFL games alongside Ian Eagle, fans can expect an engaging and insightful commentary that reflects his deep understanding of the game and his love for the NFL. With the 2025 season on the horizon, all eyes will be on Watt as he embarks on this exciting new chapter in his career.
