Jinju City is currently in a state of heightened alert for wildfire prevention following a serious wildfire risk warning. As of March 25, 2025, the situation escalated due to a fire that originated in Sancheong-gun Sicheon-myeon on March 21 and subsequently spread to Hadong-gun Okjong-myeon. This incident led the city to mobilize a significant portion of its workforce to respond to the crisis.
Upon convening an emergency situation assessment meeting on March 22, the city activated its Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters. This prompt response followed the growing concerns regarding the dry conditions and strong winds that could exacerbate fire risks. Mayor Cho Kyu-il is spearheading the headquarters, where approximately 25% of the city’s workforce has been assigned to emergency duties until the wildfire alert is lifted.
Each day, an average of 360 employees are engaged in wildfire prevention efforts. These designated teams are tasked with conducting daily patrols to monitor and prevent fire hazards. The city’s strategy includes the strict enforcement of regulations against illegal incineration of agricultural and forest byproducts to mitigate fire risks.
In addition to strict adherence to these measures, the city has been actively promoting wildfire prevention awareness among local residents. Mayor Cho emphasized the importance of community engagement in prevention efforts, stating, “Given the dry atmosphere and strong winds, the risk of large-scale wildfires is significant, and we will mobilize all available administrative power for their prevention.” He also urged residents to avoid entering mountainous areas and burning trash or agricultural byproducts during this heightened risk period.
In response to the wildfire threat, the local government has convened meetings with village leaders to enhance awareness and ensure community cooperation in preventing illegal burning activities. Additional efforts include scheduled broadcasts and posts on social media platforms to relay important messages about wildfire safety and prevention.
Furthermore, regulations have been put in place concerning the burning of agricultural waste and forest products, reflecting the city’s proactive approach to preventing fires. Local officials are monitoring these regulations closely, and they have intensified public communications to discourage behaviors that could lead to wildfires.
On March 22, in light of the escalating risk, Jinju City issued evacuation orders for seven villages in Sugok-myeon. A total of 126 residents were evacuated to the nearest shelter at Jiseo Middle School. As of now, these residents have returned home, but the city remains on high alert for potential re-evacuations if situations worsen.
For effective monitoring, Sugok-myeon has deployed five wildfire suppression vehicles along with 14 personnel dedicated to patrolling areas identified as high risk. The city has also mobilized a total of 175 personnel focused on wildfire prevention and intensive patrol, primarily concentrated during peak wildfire hours in the afternoon. A rapid response team consisting of 38 members is actively patrolling until 9 PM to bolster local safety measures.
Since November 2024, Jinju City has organized a comprehensive wildfire prevention strategy, which includes the establishment of a wildfire prevention headquarters and 26 township situation rooms. This framework is supported by the deployment of 59 wildfire prevention specialists, 116 wildfire watchers, as well as essential equipment including 18 wildfire suppression vehicles, three monitoring cameras, and one forest service helicopter. This robust apparatus aids in both the prevention and rapid response to potential wildfire outbreaks.
The importance of community engagement remains a focal point for Jinju City, emphasizing the need for residents to act responsibly. Mayor Cho concluded his remarks by encouraging residents to adhere to federal and local wildfire regulations, reinforcing the idea that community cooperation is vital to successful prevention efforts.
