Jets Secure Neal Pionk With Six-Year Extension

Defenseman signs $42 million deal as Jets prepare for playoffs

The Winnipeg Jets have signed defenseman Neal Pionk to a six-year contract extension, securing his services at an average annual value of $7 million, the team announced on Thursday, April 17, 2025. This new deal, worth a total of $42 million, comes as Pionk was set to become a free agent on July 1 after the conclusion of his current four-year, $23.5 million contract.

Pionk, 29, has had an impressive season with the Jets, contributing significantly to the team's success. In 69 games this season, he has tallied 39 points, consisting of 10 goals—matching his career high—and 29 assists. His performance has been pivotal in helping the Jets clinch the Presidents' Trophy for the best regular-season record in the NHL, finishing with a remarkable 56-22-4 record and accumulating 116 points, the best in franchise history.

Originally an undrafted free agent, Pionk signed with the New York Rangers in 2017 after playing college hockey at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He was acquired by the Jets in a trade involving Jacob Trouba in June 2019. Over his career, Pionk has amassed 256 points, including 44 goals and 212 assists, in 536 regular-season games split between the Rangers and Jets.

In addition to Pionk's extension, the Jets also recently announced a three-year contract extension for forward Alex Iafallo, worth $11 million, with an average annual value of $3,666,666. Iafallo has contributed 31 points this season, ranking third on the team in plus-minus with a +21 rating.

The Jets' strong season has been bolstered by standout performances from their key players. Forward Kyle Connor leads the team with 41 goals and 56 assists, totaling 97 points. Mark Scheifele is not far behind with 39 goals and 48 assists for 87 points. On the defensive front, Josh Morrissey leads all defensemen in scoring with 14 goals and 48 assists, amassing 62 points.

Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck has also been instrumental in the Jets’ success, boasting a stellar record of 47-12-3, a .925 save percentage, and a goals against average of 2.00. His performance has made him a favorite for the Vezina Trophy and a potential finalist for the Hart Trophy, awarded to the league's most valuable player.

As the Jets prepare for the postseason, they are set to open their playoff campaign at home against the St. Louis Blues on Saturday, April 19, 2025. With Pionk’s contract extension and the team’s impressive roster, the Jets are looking to make a deep run in the playoffs.

Pionk's ability to contribute both offensively and defensively has made him a valuable asset to the Jets, and his new contract reflects the team's commitment to keeping their core players intact. As the franchise continues to build on this successful season, fans are excited to see how far the Jets can go in the playoffs.
