Jets Extend Streak With Scheifele's Record Overtime Goal

Winnipeg rallies late to secure their franchise-record 10th consecutive win against San Jose Sharks.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — The Winnipeg Jets extended their franchise-record winning streak to ten games with a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory against the San Jose Sharks on Monday night. What looked like it might end as a disappointing loss turned around spectacularly as Josh Morrissey scored the tying goal with just 26 seconds remaining, paving the way for alternate captain Mark Scheifele to net the overtime winner.

This hard-fought victory showcases the Jets' current strong form. Connor Hellebuyck was solid between the pipes, making 17 saves, and allowed only one goal during the match. That lone goal came from the Sharks’ William Eklund, who scored during their first-period power play opportunity.

The game was tightly contested, with the Jets facing challenges throughout the match. Despite multiple power play opportunities for both teams, it was San Jose who struck first. Eklund’s well-placed one-timer put the Sharks on the board at 15:07 of the first period. He received the puck from Macklin Celebrini before sending it past Hellebuyck on the blocker side.

The Sharks controlled the pace for most of the game, entering the final minute of regulation with the lead. The Jets seemed destined to fall short until Morrissey struck when it mattered most. With Hellebuyck pulled for an extra attacker, Morrissey found the puck at the top of the left circle and unleashed a blistering slap shot to equalize the score, forcing the game to overtime.

Moments after the extra period commenced, Scheifele seized his opportunity. Following his defensive responsibilities, he moved to the net, where he capitalized on Vitek Vanecek's save on Nikolaj Ehlers’ shot, knocking it home to secure the win just 1:33 minutes in.

With this goal, Scheifele not only lifted his team to victory but also made history by becoming the Jets' all-time leading goal-scorer with his 329th career goal—surpassing the previous record held by Ilya Kovalchuk. Scheifele's achievement is particularly poignant as it reflects his long-standing commitment to the franchise, having spent all 14 years of his career with the Jets since their relocation.

“He wouldn’t believe it, that's for sure,” Scheifele reflected on breaking the franchise record. “A kid from Kitchener, playing with the Kitchener Dutchman way back when I was 16, I never would have believed you. All you've got to do is trust in God’s plan, and that's what I’ve done. I’m very grateful for my family and the Winnipeg Jets organization.”

“It’s pretty impressive. Scheif works so hard,” Morrissey added. “What he means to the city and this organization, from basically day one, is special. The fans truly embrace him, and it’s fantastic to see him rewarded tonight.”

The victory extends the Jets’ remarkable record to 41 wins, the only NHL team currently surpassing the 40-win mark this season. Winnipeg boasts the league’s best point differential at +70, with their power play converting at 31.7%, also leading the NHL.

Despite the loss, Vanecek was impressive for the Sharks with 33 saves, battling throughout to keep his team competitive. San Jose, struggling with their home game performance, has now lost six straight games and twelve of their last thirteen matches. Their power play registered just one goal on three attempts.

Looking onward, the Jets are preparing for two back-to-back road games against the Ottawa Senators and Nashville Predators. They are poised to continue their exceptional streak, carrying momentum from this historic win.

The Jets' remarkable season highlights the relentless determination of both players and coaches as they navigate the rigors of NHL competition. With Scheifele leading the charge, fans are eager to see how far they can go. The Jets' storied history continues to be written amid thrilling victories and record-breaking performances.

The Jets have demonstrated not just their skill but also their willpower as they push forward, aiming for playoff success. Can they keep this winning streak alive? The Jets and their fans will certainly be hoping the answer is yes!
