Jetour X50 And Korando Revitalize Compact SUV Market

Both models offer competitive features and pricing to attract discerning buyers.

The automotive market is buzzing with fresh offerings as two noteworthy compact SUVs, the Jetour X50 and Korando, have entered the fray. Designed to capture consumer attention and meet growing demands, both vehicles embody the spirit of innovation and competition within the industry.

The Jetour X50, brand new to the Belarusian market, made its debut with much fanfare, echoing familiar dimensions to its competitor, the BELGEE X50. At 4,397 mm long, 1,841 mm wide, and 1,654 mm high, the X50 dimensions place it squarely within the compact crossover segment, set to challenge rivals like the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro and the BAIC X35.

Launching with two engine options, the X50 offers choices between the atmospheric 1.5-litre SQRE4G15C, producing 113 horsepower and 138 Nm of torque, and the turbocharged SQRE4T15C delivering 147 horsepower paired with dual-clutch transmission. Both engines utilize AI-92 fuel and, unlike many competitors, the X50 features rear multi-link suspension—boasting improved ride comfort and handling.

The vehicle is priced between BYN 72,900 and BYN 79,900 (approximately $22,730 to $24,910), and with three trim levels, buyers are offered various features. A road test revealed encouraging results, with the turbo variant reaching 100 km/h in about 11.1 seconds—a performance figure quite competitive for its class, yet it may fall short against the BELGEE X50.

Behind the wheel, reviewers noted the Jetour X50's acceleration felt somewhat sluggish, particularly when starting from rest. Though the dual-clutch system allowed for smooth city drivability, the vehicle exhibited occasional lags. Once on the move, the X50 earned praise for its seamless handling, resembling more of a hatchback than a compact SUV, and proficiently managing road imperfections due to its suspension setup. A modest ground clearance of 186 mm facilitates light off-road excursions, ideal for weekend picnics or fishing trips.

Inside, the Jetour X50 presents itself as well-equipped, featuring customizable comfort options. The cabin remains relatively quiet thanks to effective sound insulation, and practical additions such as four USB ports cater well to tech-savvy drivers. Nevertheless, some design choices—like light-colored ecoprene inserts—may prove less practical over time.

Transitioning to Korando, the automotive evolution of South Korea traces back to its roots with models like the original Korando introduced by Dong-A Motor four decades ago. Today's Korando, now under the KGM brand, showcases significant advancements. The latest fourth-generation model, launched internationally at the Geneva auto show, is larger (with improved interior space) and packed with modern conveniences.

The recent Korando offers both 1.5-litre turbo petrol and 1.6-litre diesel engines, paired with either manual or automatic transmission. Notably, localized versions align with consumer preferences, including features desired for family vehicles, such as ample cabin space and efficient transport capabilities—boasting 551 liters of trunk volume.

KGM has focused on enhancing comfort, including features like dual-zone climate control, multimedia systems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, and advanced driving assist technologies. Driver convenience is emphasized through ergonomically arranged controls and driving mode selectors, which aid during urban commutes or challenging weather. The Korando's pricing structure ranges around 4,390,000 rubles for the base variant up to 5,390,000 for the top-tier full-option model.

While Korando’s range offers substantial technological advancements, potential buyers may find brand competitions from established names, such as the Hyundai Tucson and Mazda CX-5, compelling. Here, KGM must leverage aggressive marketing to communicate reliability and affordability, preparing for market challenges against well-known brands.

Both the Jetour X50 and the Korando represent the changing dynamics within the compact SUV market. Buyers, seeking value alongside functionality, are served well with these options catering to diverse needs. The future remains to be seen as to whether these newcomers can compete and carve out their space amid well-entrenched models. The Jetour X50 emphasizes affordability and practicality, attracting buyers with its competitive pricing and modern features. Meanwhile, the Korando, rich with lineage and contemporary amenities, provides potential family-friendly solutions with its spacious design and comprehensive tech.
