Jeremy Renner And Gemma Arterton Reflect On Film Successes

The pair discuss their shared film history and the new standards for intimacy on set.

Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, two notable figures from the film industry, continue to make headlines not only for their past roles but also for their reflections on the changes within the cinematic world. Most famously, they starred together in the 2013 film Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, which followed Hansel and Gretel as modern-day witch hunters facing dark forces related to their past. Despite the movie's dismal 14% critic score and 53% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, it grossed over $226 million worldwide, demonstrating the film's commercial appeal against all odds.

Directed by Tommy Wirkola, known for his unique blend of horror and comedy, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters emerged as one of the top films on Prime Video globally, currently holding the #5 spot. The film’s mixed reviews have almost faded from public memory, particularly as Renner has gone on to have considerable success with projects such as the Paramount+ series Mayor of Kingstown, which has been renewed for its fourth season. Arterton is also making waves, known for her prior work as Strawberry Fields in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace.

Yet, beyond their film successes, Arterton has recently shed light on significant shifts within the industry, particularly surrounding how intimate scenes are handled amid the #MeToo movement. She expressed her satisfaction with the introduction of intimacy coordinators, which aim to provide structure and safety when filming such scenes. “One time, a sex scene was just thrown upon me. Like, ‘This is what’s going to happen,’ and I did it. That wouldn’t happen now, with intimacy coordinators,” she recalled. Arterton’s comments highlight the evolution of the industry, promoting much-needed professionalism and clarity to what was once spontaneous and uncontrolled.

While discussing how intimacy coordinators have changed the game, Arterton noted, “I’m really pleased we have intimacy coordinators now. It takes away the unknown. There’s no ambiguity. It does feel a bit prescriptive, but then it’s like learning an accent, a fight, or a dance – you have to go through the motions first, then you make it feel more spontaneous and relaxed.” Clearly, this new approach is significant to the safety and comfort of performers today, offering guidelines and support during what can be exceedingly vulnerable moments.

The actress reflected on her early experiences, sharing her worries for younger actors who may not know they can assert themselves. “That’s why I’m worried about younger actors, or replaceable actors. I’ve heard stories from actor friends who are less established or starting out, where they felt they couldn’t say anything because they’d get fired,” Arterton said. These candid revelations underline the pressing issue of power dynamics within the industry, where less experienced talent may feel ill-equipped to voice their discomfort.

Addressing the fallout from the #MeToo movement, she pointed out how the culture of accountability has transformed the industry, underscoring the increased resources to support actors facing harassment. “At the top of every call sheet, there’s a number to call if you’re going through anything. It’s completely anonymous. That’s really great because it wasn’t there before. There’s been loads of change. If there’s any bullying, there are outlets you can contact,” Arterton explained. This access ensures greater transparency and safety, creating rooms for voices to rise and issues to be addressed.

These developments echo broader cultural changes aimed at making Hollywood safer and more accountable to its talent. Renner and Arterton, through their careers and advocacy, exemplify how personal experiences intertwine with larger societal shifts. The duo’s collaboration on Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters serves as more than just entertainment; it reflects the evolution of Hollywood's standards and ethics.

Moving forward, both actors highlight the importance of mutual respect, safety, and professionalism within the industry, ensuring the next generation of talent can thrive under improved conditions. Their ability to adapt and share these significant insights keeps them relevant both onscreen and off, opening dialogue about the industry’s past and its hopeful future.
