Jeep Unveils All-New Compass EV With 400-Mile Range

The redesigned Compass EV promises advanced tech and off-road capabilities but won't be available in the U.S. for now.

Jeep has finally lifted the curtain on the all-new Compass EV, marking a significant step in the brand's transition to electric vehicles. With a bold redesign, advanced technology, and an impressive estimated range of over 400 miles, the Compass EV is poised to capture attention. However, American consumers will have to wait, as the model will not be available in the U.S. market anytime soon.

This fresh start for Jeep's most affordable SUV comes after the retirement of the Renegade and Cherokee, focusing the brand's efforts on the Compass. The new Compass EV, unveiled during a private press event, incorporates Jeep's classic rugged DNA while embracing modern enhancements. Features such as an active grille shutter, air ducts for improved airflow, and a flat underbody enhance the vehicle's efficiency. The rear edges have also been reshaped for better aerodynamics, demonstrating how small details can make a significant impact.

Inside, the Compass EV boasts a futuristic cockpit equipped with a 10-inch digital display and a massive 16-inch infotainment screen. Jeep has also included Level 2 autonomous driving as standard, along with optional upgrades like Matrix LED headlights, semi-automated lane changes, and even massaging seats for higher trims. Power options are diverse, offering a mild hybrid with 145 horsepower, a plug-in hybrid with 195 horsepower, and fully electric variants starting at 213 horsepower for the front-wheel-drive model, going up to 375 horsepower for the top-tier all-wheel-drive version.

One of the standout features of the Compass EV is its extensive range. The vehicle promises up to 404 miles (650 km) under Europe’s WLTP cycle, and it supports DC fast charging, allowing drivers to charge from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes—ideal for road trips or daily commutes.

However, American buyers face disappointment as Jeep has confirmed that production for the U.S. market is currently on hold. A company spokesperson stated that Jeep is “reassessing its strategy” for North America, citing a rapidly changing market and evolving customer needs. Consequently, work has paused at Jeep’s Brampton Assembly Plant in Ontario, where the U.S. model was slated to be built. As of now, there is no clear timeline for when—if at all—the new Compass EV will be available in the U.S.

In contrast, European customers can already place orders for the Compass EV and the Compass 4xe plug-in hybrid, with deliveries set to begin by the end of 2025. The First Edition EV, featuring 213 horsepower and front-wheel drive, includes standout characteristics such as 20-inch wheels, Jeep’s Selec Terrain system, and an optional sunroof.

Looking ahead, the current 2025 Jeep Compass starts just under $27,000 in the U.S. If the EV version eventually makes its way stateside, experts estimate it could range from $30,000 to $35,000—a competitive price for a fully electric SUV with significant off-road capabilities. Until then, Jeep enthusiasts in North America will have to admire the new Compass EV from a distance.

Jeep has revealed that the new third-generation Compass SUV is based on the STLA Medium platform, which supports multiple powertrains on a single architecture. The new design is sharper and bolder than its predecessor, drawing inspiration from both the smaller Avenger and the larger Grand Cherokee. The vehicle retains the brand’s iconic seven-slot grille, now featured within a more upright front fascia, and includes trapezoidal wheel arches and robust plastic cladding, enhancing its rugged appeal.

The updated Compass measures 4,548mm in length, making it 150mm longer than the previous model, with an extended wheelbase of 2,795mm, resulting in 55mm more legroom. The new SUV's off-road capabilities include a ground clearance of 201mm, with approach, breakover, and departure angles rated at 20, 15, and 26 degrees, respectively. Moreover, these models can wade through water up to 470mm deep, showcasing their adventurous spirit.

Inside, the Compass features a new dashboard layout, highlighted by a prominent 16.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that serves as the primary interface for controls. Other interior enhancements include a 10.0-inch digital cluster, multi-zone climate control, a head-up display, Matrix LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, connected car technology, a premium sound system, and wireless charging capabilities. Safety features include multiple airbags and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Regarding powertrain options, the third-generation Compass will offer a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine paired with a small 0.9kWh battery and 48V mild-hybrid technology, producing 145 horsepower. Additionally, a 1.6-litre four-cylinder plug-in hybrid petrol engine coupled with a 125hp electric motor will provide a combined output of 195 horsepower and a 21kWh battery. The all-electric Jeep Compass will be available with two battery pack options—a 73kWh pack paired with a 213hp front-axle electric motor, offering a claimed range of 500km, and a 97kWh pack coupled with a 233hp front-axle motor, delivering a range of up to 650km under the WLTP cycle.

The all-wheel-drive capability is exclusive to the electric Compass, which features a 4xe variant that integrates an additional 179hp rear electric motor, boosting total power output to 375hp. For charging, the battery electric vehicle (BEV) versions support a 160kW DC fast charger, enabling a 20% to 80% top-up in around 30 minutes, with an onboard AC charger offering up to 22kW available.

As Jeep embarks on this new chapter with the Compass, it aims to blend its rich heritage of ruggedness and adventure with the demands of modern electrification. The new Compass EV represents a bold move forward, yet American consumers will have to remain patient as they await its arrival.
