CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jaycee Horn has officially made history as the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history after agreeing to a four-year contract extension with the Carolina Panthers valued at $100 million. The Panthers announced the deal on Monday, March 10, 2025, which features $70 million guaranteed and has the potential to reach up to $108 million based on performance incentives.
Horn, who was drafted as the 8th overall pick by the Panthers in 2021, has recently enjoyed one of his most productive seasons. Last year, he earned his first Pro Bowl selection with impressive stats, including 68 total tackles, 2 sacks, and 1 interception, solidifying his role as a key player on the team. The contract extension not only rewards his on-field performances but also signifies the Panthers’ commitment to bolster their defense.
The deal, which averages $25 million per year, surpasses the previous record held by Jalen Ramsey, who earns $24.1 million annually, and Patrick Surtain II, whose contract averages $24 million. This new contract positions Horn as the focal point of the Panthers' defense, leading the franchise’s efforts to improve following multiple seasons of disappointments.
General Manager Dan Morgan emphasized Horn’s importance to the team earlier this season, stating, "Jaycee is obviously the focal point of the defense, somebody we’re going to want here long-term." The Panthers had previously exercised Horn’s fifth-year option on his rookie deal, highlighting their intent to secure him for future seasons.
After struggling with injuries during his first three years, Horn managed to stay healthy for the majority of the 2024 season, playing 98% of the defensive snaps across 15 games. His performance has shown significant improvement; as he put it, "The game slows down for you when you play more; I'm just excited to get back next year and try to stack them up."
This contract now sets the expectation for other young cornerbacks entering the league, including Sauce Gardner and Derek Stingley Jr., as they look to secure their own lucrative deals.
Head Coach Dave Canales also praised Horn for his growth both on and off the field, depicting him as not only skilled but also dedicated to his teammates. Canales says Horn has shown great professionalism, instilling stability and excellence within the locker room. Reflecting on Horn's development, the head coach mentioned, "I saw a guy who was just so focused on helping the team; he provides something solid for the other guys to see: ‘This is how you achieve excellence.’"
The Panthers' decision to invest heavily in Horn aligns with their strategies to restructure the team and improve its competitive edge as they aim for more successful seasons. With the commitment secured, Horn is set to be part of the Panthers’ long-term vision, strategically pairing him with fellow 2020 first-round pick Derrick Brown, underscoring the club's focus on solidifying defensive strengths.
Overall, Horn's contract and the impact it has on both the player and the Panthers' future cannot be understated. It marks not only personal achievement for Horn but also reflects the franchise's ambitions to fortify its defense through strategic investments. Game by game, the excitement builds as Horn prepares to continue his ascent within the ranks of NFL athletes.
