Javier Milei To Attend Trump's Historic January 20th Ceremony

International leaders invited to Trump's inauguration, breaking presidential traditions.

On January 20, 2024, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration is set to mark not just his return to power, but also the potential attendance of international leaders, breaking with long-standing tradition.

Argentina's President Javier Milei is expected to grace the event, according to official sources. A spokesperson confirmed this to local media over the weekend, and it's been reported across various outlets. Milei, who has openly expressed his admiration for Trump, attended the president-elect's victory party at Mar-a-Lago following Trump's election win over Kamala Harris.

While traditionally, foreign leaders have skipped U.S. presidential inaugurations, opting instead for diplomats to represent their countries, Milei's attendance would mark a historic occasion. If confirmed, he would become the first Argentine president to attend the swearing-in ceremony of a U.S. president.

Documents from the U.S. State Department cite no foreign leaders attending such ceremonies for over a century, highlighting the notable expectations surrounding Trump's inauguration. The event is normally attended by ambassadors, lawmakers, and the general public, but Trump is eager to invite select international dignitaries.

Recent reports reveal Trump has invited multiple world leaders, including Xi Jinping, president of China. CBS News reported this week on the unexpected invitation, which would be extraordinary and unlikely to materialize, as no foreign heads of state have attended recent inaugurations.

Trump has had fluctuated opinions about Xi, stating on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, "He controls 1.4 billion people with an iron fist. I mean, he's a brilliant guy, whether you like it or not." Yet, Trump's criticism of Chinese policies has been vocal, pledging to enforce heightened tariffs on Chinese goods following his inauguration.

According to Trump's spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, this move demonstrates Trump’s intention to maintain dialogue with both adversaries and allies: "This is an example of President Trump creating open dialogue with leaders of countries." Despite the bid for Xi's attendance, two sources revealed he is less likely to join the festivities, with China choosing to send its ambassador to the U.S. instead.

Milei looks forward to establishing closer ties with the U.S., aspiring to negotiate trade agreements and lift capital controls instituted during his administration. His economic plans include leveraging the existing $44 billion program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), aiming for negotiation pathways with the U.S. government. Following Trump's election, he expressed this via social media, “Congratulations on your formidable electoral victory. Now, make America great again. You know you can count on Argentina to carry out your task.”

Other leaders, including Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele, have also been invited, but their attendance remains uncertain. Since the election results, Trump has initiated correspondence with over 100 world leaders, emphasizing attempts to maintain international relations and goodwill.

Trump's approach to the inauguration is unorthodox. An event typically viewed by ambassadors and congressmembers, the reality of traditional international attendance has been overshadowed by Trump's style of diplomacy. His willingness to extend invitations to heads of state establishes the inauguration as more than just a ceremonial event but rather as part of nurturing international ties.

People from both the political sphere and citizenry are observing closely to see what this unusual outreach means for future diplomacy. The invitation extended to Xi, though seeming unlikely, highlights Trump's intention to engage with various global leaders, regardless of past tensions.

Contrary to official protocol, where foreign dignitaries are usually represented by ambassadors, the invitation list has raised eyebrows among diplomats accustomed to standard practices. This move shows Trump's desire to redefine the ceremonial mold surrounding presidential inaugurations.

Outside of Xi, Oscar-winning leaders, such as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have also received informal invitations, but it remains to be seen if they will accept. Trump has stated, "If he’d like to come, I’d like to have him," portraying the engaging stance he wishes to adopt with all international leaders.

With Milei expected to attend and carrying the banner of change, January 20 will not only serve as Donald Trump's return to the presidency but also as a unique moment of possible international significance, as the new American administration seeks to reshape its foreign relations.

Overall, Trump’s approach has set the stage for what could become not simply another inauguration but one steeped in potential diplomatic realignment, reminding us of history’s tendency to weave the fates of nations together during significant ceremonies.
