Jasir Asani Gears Up For Big Matches After Rigorous Schedule

Gwangju FC star prepares to represent Albania in World Cup qualifiers against England and Andorra after demanding club performances.

Jasir Asani, the 29-year-old midfielder for Gwangju FC, is feeling the weight of a demanding schedule as he transitions from club commitments to significant national duties. On March 12, 2025, Asani played a grueling 120 minutes in the second leg of the AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE) Round of 16, where he scored multiple goals against Ventforet Kofu from Japan, helping Gwangju secure a spot in the quarterfinals. Just days later, on March 16, he faced Gimcheon Sangmu in the K League 1, where he played 85 minutes, contributing both offensively and defensively to end the match in a 0-0 draw.

After the match with Gimcheon, Asani candidly expressed his exhaustion: "Honestly, it was really tough." He explained, "We played 120 minutes against Kofu, and just days later, we had to travel away for another match. Yet, it's positive that we managed to grab one point in such a difficult situation. It’s tiring, but that’s football. We must give 100% for the fans in any circumstance. More matches mean we’re achieving better results, and that’s a good thing." Asani's commitment to his performance and team is clear, emphasizing the dedication expected of a professional athlete.

Immediately following the match, there was no time for rest. Asani jetted off to Incheon International Airport, embarking on a rigorous journey consisting of a KTX train ride from Gimcheon to Gwangmyeong, followed by a taxi ride to the airport. His hurried schedule is largely due to his continued call-up from the Albanian national football team, which has recognized his talents since March 2023.

Asani’s upcoming commitments are critical as Albania readies for the 2026 North America World Cup European Qualifiers. They are set to face a tough group, including England, Andorra, Latvia, and Serbia. The highlight of Albania’s schedule is their matchup against England on March 22, 2025, at the renowned Wembley Stadium—dubbed the home of football. "It’s a great honor to play for the Albania national team," Asani said, beaming with enthusiasm about the important fixture and the significance behind playing at Wembley.

Asani, who has previously played at notable venues including the Signal Iduna Park, home of Borussia Dortmund, reflected on his anticipation for the upcoming match against England. He remarks, "I will do my best to show that Albania is a really good team, and although England is strong, we won't simply back down." The encounter is highly anticipated by fans and experts alike, marking the first game at the helm for England’s new coach, Thomas Tuchel.

Since debuting for the Albanian national team on March 28, 2023, in a match against Poland, where he showcased his skills as a right midfielder, Asani has established himself as a crucial asset. He played alongside prominent players such as Robert Lewandowski and has been recognized as a key contributor to Albania’s qualification for the Euro 2024. Reflecting on his growth and journey, he noted, "Last year, there was a period when I wasn’t getting much game time with Gwangju, and I honestly had a lot of doubts. But I managed to overcome it, and now, I have a great relationship with coach Lee Jung-hyo. We inspire each other."

Notably, Asani’s journey hasn’t always been smooth sailing. In the first half of the 2024 season, coach Lee Jung-hyo publicly expressed dissatisfaction with Asani’s physical condition and training attitude, allowing him only 20 minutes across a single game. Determined to reclaim his position within the team culture, Asani worked hard to adapt and secure a spot as a starting player. He spoke highly of his coach, stating, "Coach Lee Jung-hyo is one of the most outstanding coaches in the K League. His passion for victory and a firm belief in creating a unique style for Gwangju are truly inspiring."

The connection between Asani and Lee has evolved into a constructive relationship, motivating Asani to excel both on and off the pitch. Asani’s phone background features a memorable photo of himself in the Albania national team uniform, a constant reminder of his goals and aspirations. "Representing the Albania national team is an immense honor," he added, as he prepares for the England match, vowing to demonstrate Albania’s potential while aiming for a positive outcome.

In addition to facing England, Albania has another match lined up shortly after on March 25, 2025, against Andorra. In anticipation of these critical matches, Asani made an earnest plea: "I want to ask K League fans, including those supporting Gwangju, for their attention and support." His excitement is palpable as he gears up for what promises to be a memorable showcase of talent and determination. Asani is ready to fight for Albania’s pride and success in international football.
