Japanese Jazz Scene Flourishes With Fresh Releases And Live Events

Japanese jazz music continues to thrive, showcasing innovative releases and vibrant live performances. Recent albums highlight the genre's richness and diversity, demonstrating the continuing evolution of jazz across generations and styles.

Fresh off his well-received performance at Blue Note Tokyo, trumpet virtuoso Christian Scott has released his new album, Stretch Music (Ropeadope). This album is marked by sharp rhythms and ensemble sound, making it a delightful masterpiece. The visually stunning red cover features Scott’s unique trumpet, which resembles "a puzzle" – instantly captivating listeners. This new work stands as testimony to Scott's artistry and fresh perspective within the jazz genre.

Snarky Puppy, the acclaimed collective known for their eclectic collaborations, has made waves with their recent release, Family Dinner Vol. 2 (Ground Up). The album opens with "I Asked" featuring Becca Stevens, complemented by diverse guest artists. The track "Morino Moreno" includes contributions from guitarist Charlie Hunter and the South American singer Susana Baca, offering exotic flavors. The subsequent track, "Liquid Love," featuring soul singer Chris Turner, demonstrates Snarky Puppy's ability to adapt and transform their music, each piece reflecting the essence of its guest artist. Their capacity to maintain musical cohesion, even with this kaleidoscope of styles, remains exceptional.

Emerging pianist Julien Shore has unveiled his album Which Way Now (Tone Rough Record), which encourages listeners' imaginations through its vibrant sound. The interplay of beauty and strength within the piano's resonance captivates the audience, making Shore’s fresh voice one to watch.

Celebrated composer Carla Bley, now celebrating her 80th birthday, has released Andand el Tiempo (ECM). This simple trio album features saxophonist Andy Sheppard and longstanding collaborator bassist Steve Swallow. It showcases Bley's undiminished musical imagination, delivering energy even within the calmest passages. Her piano touch is filled with surprise, proving her creative powers have not waned over the decades.

Adding to the contemporary scene is the duo album Hand in Hand (self-produced) from the popular Brazilian singer Tatiana Bird and Armenian pianist Vardan Ovsepian, noted for their captivating blend of coolness and intellect. On another note, the 'k.a.t.' jazz trio, formed by established Japanese musicians Ota Ken (sax), Akita Shinji (piano), and Doi Takayuki (bass), brings unique artistry to the stage. The 'Intro' jazz cafe located in Takadanobaba, Tokyo, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Originally lacking instruments, the cafe has transformed, particularly since establishing jam sessions around 1990. By collaborating with nearby Waseda University’s jazz circles, they forged paved the way for amateur and professional musicians alike to commune. It is now renowned as a vibrant jazz session bar.
