Japanese Film '35年目のラブレター' Premieres With Heartwarming Tales

Stars share personal challenges and insights at Tokyo's emotional premiere event of the film.

On February 3, 2023, the much-anticipated premiere of the film 35年目のラブレター took place at the Nikkei Hall in Tokyo, featuring prominent Japanese actors including 笑福亭鶴瓶 (Shofukutei Tsurube) and 原田知世 (Tomoyo Harada), who shared their insights about this heartwarming project based on true events.

The film tells the inspiring story of 西畑保 (Yasuyuki Nishihata), who, having struggled with literacy throughout his early life, decided to learn how to write love letters to his wife after 35 years of marriage. His wife, portrayed by Harada, had supported him throughout this heartwarming but challenging endeavor, showcasing not only their love but also the transformative power of education.

During the press event, Tsurube expressed optimism about the film’s impact, stating, “自分で言うのもおかしいですけど、いい映画” (It's strange for me to say, but it's a good movie). His pride reflected the emotional depth and authenticity experienced throughout the film's production.

Likewise, Harada shared her own personal challenges, noting her venture to learn golf at age 50, saying, “50代になってからゴルフを始めて...自分の伸びしろみたいなものを見つけた気がしたんですね” (Since turning 50, I've started golf... I feel like I've found my room for growth). Her reflection on personal growth echoed the film's underlying theme of continuous learning and emotional evolution.

The film also featured other talented actors such as 重岡大毅 (Daiki Shigeoka) and 上白石萌音 (Mone Kamishiraishi), who played the younger versions of Tsurube’s and Harada’s characters. Despite this being his first major film, Daiki expressed encouragement from Tsurube, who felt the younger actors mirrored his own youthful spirit.

At the event, Tsurube humorously remarked about his age and the challenges he faces as he continues to perform. “73歳やから、ものすごい覚え悪いですよ。それを入れて入れて出来上がったんですけど、これが終わったらまた次のネタをやっていく” (At 73, I have terrible memory. I've completed this but will start the next challenge right after). His light-hearted approach illustrated not only the spirit of the event but also highlighted the relentless pursuit of personal challenges.

The film 35年目のラブレター, directed by 塚本連平 (Renpei Tsukamoto), is inspired by the true story of Nishihata, who enrolled in night school at age 65 to learn writing. The tale culminates with him finally being able to present his love letter to his wife on their 35th anniversary together. Set for nationwide release on March 7, the film promises to resonate deeply with audiences, capturing the essence of love, perseverance, and the importance of education.

Following the event, fans and attendees expressed excitement for the film’s upcoming release, hoping it would inspire others just like it inspired its cast. The blend of humor, warmth, and deep emotional connection within the narrative holds the potential to touch many hearts.

Overall, the premiere of 35年目のラブレター not only highlighted the film's engaging story but also the personal journeys of its actors, emphasizing how love fuels the desire for growth and learning throughout one's life.
