Japanese Expressway Traffic Forecasts Warn Of Major Congestion

NEXCO predicts heavy traffic during year-end celebrations, advising travelers to avoid peak hours.

With the year-end and New Year's holidays approaching, traffic congestion is expected to peak on Japanese expressways, particularly between December 28 and January 5, according to NEXCO Central Japan.

The company announced its predictions for heavy traffic over the holiday season, which is traditionally characterized by increased travel. "The peak of congestion is expected on December 28-29 and January 2 for the down line, and from January 2-4 for the up line," NEXCO Central Japan reported.

Altogether, they forecast 99 occurrences of traffic congestion exceeding 10 km during this period. Specific congested routes include major highways such as the Tōmei and Chūō expressways. For example, on December 28, significant congestion is predicted around the Ayase Smart Interchange, with delays expected to reach 25 km.

The heavy traffic is attributed to the traditional end-of-year travel patterns, where families and individuals rush to visit relatives, take vacations, or return home. Data indicates this year may see more congestion due to these factors compared to last year, especially considering the anticipated weather conditions and roadwork. Logistical concerns are mounting within the logistics industry as well, which heavily depends on the highway system.

NEXCO encourages travelers to check traffic forecasts and adjust their travel plans accordingly. According to their forecasts, the down line during this period would experience elevated congestion, and those traveling up the expressways should be particularly cautious between January 2 and 4.

Despite the looming traffic jams, NEXCO is committed to providing real-time updates to assist drivers. They have emphasized the importance of keeping informed about traffic situations before hitting the road. Nationally, some stretches of highway may experience delays exceeding 100 minutes at certain times—such delays are not just from high traffic but can also be exacerbated by weather conditions such as snow predicted around this time.

The Tōmei expressway and the Chūō expressway are two of the most frequented routes during this period. Travelers on the Tōmei expressway can expect significant delays, especially near the Toyota Junction, where up to 20 km of traffic backup is expected.

Last year, adverse weather conditions had mitigated some of the holiday traffic, resulting in lower congestion numbers. This year, though, the forecasts indicate higher travel volumes, which experts believe will lead to more extensive traffic disruptions and longer wait times.

It is important for all motorists planning to travel during this busy period to keep informed and perhaps even opt for alternative routes or travel at non-peak hours. By checking the NEXCO official website or using the JARTIC traffic information services, drivers can receive timely updates on congestion points and adjust their journeys accordingly.

For drivers heading toward the Kanto regions, delays are also expected. On January 2, congestion around the Kobu Tunnel may lead to backup surpassing 20 km, with anticipated travel times increasing significantly compared to normal conditions.

Travelers are advised to take proactive steps and utilize traffic information services provided by NEXCO. These platforms supply not only congestion forecasts but also alternative routes and other relevant information aimed at easing travel during peak times. Such measures are pivotal as they can dramatically improve travel experiences during these busy holiday periods.

Finally, as travelers prepare for these holiday journeys, it's worth noting the significance of being flexible with travel schedules and maintaining awareness of real-time traffic information to navigate the highways more effectively.
