Japan's weather forecasting just got more accessible with the launch of the business-oriented weather app, "biz tenki." Developed by the Japan Meteorological Association (JMA), the app was made available for subscription use on February 26, 2025, marking a significant expansion from its initial beta release aimed solely at corporations.
Previously, "biz tenki" operated as a free-to-use beta version starting on April 17, 2024, primarily targeting business users through dedicated channels. Now, the JMA is excited to announce the app's new availability through iOS and Android app stores, allowing anyone to utilize its services, whether for corporate decisions or personal planning.
"We are excited to provide not just corporations but also individuals with access to our weather forecasting app, enhancing decision-making for various activities," said Watanabe Kazuhiro, the Chairman of the Japan Meteorological Association.
Users can now subscribe to "biz tenki" for 650 yen per month, with the opportunity to enjoy the first three months free if they register before April 23, 2025. The app provides comprehensive weather data including forecasts up to 30 days, perceived temperature, and specific disaster risk information for the next two weeks. This functionality enables individuals and businesses to have real-time weather insights at their fingertips, useful for planning events or daily activities.
The app distinguishes itself by offering detailed forecasts based on 1km grid point precision, catering solely to land data. Users will receive accurate predictions for temperature, precipitation, and snowfall, as well as comparative analyses with the previous year’s data.
Beyond everyday weather updates, the app also includes risk assessments for severe weather events like heavy rain and snowfall. This level of detail positions "biz tenki" as not just another weather app, but as an indispensable tool for risk management within businesses.
Research conducted from November 1, 2023, to October 31, 2024, showcased the JMA's prowess. They revealed their 14-day temperature forecast had an average Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of 1.02 degrees Celsius, outperforming the Japan Meteorological Agency's standard forecasts, which averaged at 1.12. The lower the RMSE, the more accurate the prediction is deemed, thereby reinforcing the value of the new app.
This significant advancement is not just about accuracy; it’s about usability and bringing high-standard meteorological data to everyone, reflecting the JMA's commitment to enhancing the daily lives of users through technology.
The app is also responsive to seasonal changes. For example, as winter gave way to early spring, it provided consumers with insights contrasting last year's trends—helping them adapt—while staying informed about the overall weather patterns anticipated for the summer months.
"biz tenki" is open to individual users who want to stay updated on their weather conditions or manage their outdoor events more effectively. It's set to revolutionize the way people interact with weather forecasts and help businesses react swiftly to changing conditions.
For users interested in maximizing their experience, comprehensive guides on how to utilize the app effectively, along with FAQs, are available through relevant links on the JMA's website. These resources aim to bridge any gaps for new users to transition smoothly.
With plans to expand features and integrate feedback from users, "biz tenki" hopes to serve individuals and corporate clients more efficiently, helping them stay prepared for whatever weather challenges lie ahead.
Overall, the introduction of "biz tenki" exemplifies how meteorological data can be modernized and democratized through technological advancements. For both corporate and individual users, having precise and practical weather forecasts at their disposal marks a substantial step forward, emphasizing the importance of reliable weather information.
