Japan Launches New Passport With Enhanced Security Features

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs introduces a streamlined application process and anti-counterfeiting measures for improved traveler security.

Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially launched the new "2025 Passport" as of March 24, 2025, enhancing security measures aimed at combating counterfeiting while improving the overall application process for travelers. The redesigned passport introduces a host of advanced features that promise to make international travel more secure and user-friendly.

Starting today, applicants can submit their requests for the new passport, which boasts significant anti-counterfeiting measures as recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). One of the standout innovations is the integration of the photo page and the embedded IC chip page into a single plastic sheet, a substantial change that aims to reduce the potential for forgery. Additionally, facial photographs and names will now be printed using state-of-the-art laser technology that utilizes techniques traditionally reserved for banknote printing, making them particularly difficult to replicate.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has centralized the production of passports at the National Printing Bureau. This will enhance the quality of passports but comes with a trade-off; the processing time for applications has been extended. Previously, the turnaround time from application to issuance was approximately one week; it has now increased to about two weeks for domestic applications. International applications processed at embassies and consulates may even take between two weeks to a month, depending on the location.

In recognition of these changes, the Ministry is urging individuals planning to travel abroad to submit their passport applications early—ideally, at least one month prior to their intended travel date. This advance notice is essential to accommodate the extended processing times introduced with the new passport features.

To further modernize the application process, the Ministry has made it possible for citizens to apply for new passports online in every prefecture using their My Number card starting today. This user-friendly online option is expected to streamline the experience for applicants, making it easier to manage passport renewals and new applications.

The push for a more secure and efficient passport process is reflective of broader global security measures, aiming to protect travelers and nations alike from the risks associated with counterfeit documentation. With the introduction of the "2025 Passport," Japan is taking proactive steps to enhance its travel policies place safety at the forefront.

Potential travelers are encouraged to stay informed about these changes and take advantage of the new online application system to ensure a smooth transition into the new passport requirements. The Ministry's emphasis on timely applications and modernization reflects a commitment to facilitating global travel while enhancing security.
