Japan Launches H3 Rocket With Advanced Earth Satellite

Successful mission boosts Japan's space capabilities and disaster response technology

In a landmark achievement for Japan's space ambitions, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) successfully launched its third H3 rocket, carrying the Advanced Land Observing Satellite-4 (ALOS-4). The rocket lifted off from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture at precisely 12:06 p.m. JST (11:06 p.m. EDT on June 30), marking a crucial step forward following previous setbacks in the launch program.

The excitement was palpable within the control room as the rocket ascended, overcoming the challenges that had plagued its maiden flight last year, where an upper-stage engine failure forced it to self-destruct shortly after liftoff. The H3 rocket is designed to be Japan's new workhorse for space transportation, intended to replace the aging H-2A rocket by 2025.
