Japan Honors 3990 Individuals With 2025 Spring Decorations

The Japanese government announced the recipients of the 2025 Spring Decorations on April 29, 2025, honoring a total of 3,990 individuals for their contributions across various fields. This year's awards include the prestigious Order of the Paulownia Flowers, the Order of the Rising Sun, and the Order of the Sacred Treasure.

Among the recipients, two were awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia Flowers: former Prime Minister Naozumi Tsubaki, aged 78, and former President of the House of Councillors, Risaburo Oshima, also 78 years old. Their selections highlight significant contributions to the nation, with Tsubaki noted for his leadership during a critical period in Japan's political history.

In the category of the Order of the Rising Sun, 949 individuals were recognized, including notable figures such as film subtitle translator Natsuko Toda, aged 88, and Kyogen performer Shime Shuyama Nanagomizo, 77, whose real name is Masao Shuyama. Additionally, the Order of the Sacred Treasure was awarded to 3,039 recipients, with 436 of the total recipients being women, representing 10.9% of the entire group. This includes 136 individuals affiliated with the Ministry of Defense, among whom are seven women. The Ministry of Defense's recipients include three with the Medium Cordon of the Sacred Treasure, 89 with the Small Cordon, 14 with the Double Rays (including one woman), and 30 with the Single Ray (including six women).

The government’s recognition of individuals from various prefectures is also noteworthy, with 61 recipients from Kyoto and 34 from Shiga Prefecture. This broad representation underscores the diverse contributions made by citizens across Japan.
