Japan Faces Cold Weekend Weather With Snow Forecasted

Winter pressure systems return, bringing frigid temperatures and potential snowfall across the nation.

Japan is bracing for cold weather as it heads toward the weekend, with predictions of returning winter pressure systems likely to bring snow and frigid temperatures across various regions.

On February 13, Japan's weather forecast indicated the presence of cold northern winds from the northeast, leading to chilly temperatures. Meteorologists warn of slopes potentially being subject to blizzards, particularly affecting northern Japan and Hokuriku regions.

“A cold winter pressure pattern is returning, and areas including northern Japan and Hokuriku can expect snowfall and severe blizzards,” reported KRY Yamaguchi Broadcasting Weather Forecaster Akihara Koki. This cold wave is moving from the north and contributing to the expectation of snowy conditions.

Locally, daytime highs on the 13th are expected around 8 degrees Celsius, which is uncomfortably low for many. Particularly at night, temperatures are predicted to drop even lower, with sub-zero conditions likely appearing again by the morning of February 14. “Temperatures will remain low, with icy conditions predicted as we move through the weekend,” noted the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The forecast for February 14 points to clear skies after morning frost, but the cold will linger, and highs could just exceed 10 degrees Celsius. Notably, the weekend is also forecasted with abundant clouds leading to rain expected on February 15 night through February 16, potentially accumulating snow on the west coast due to the favorable atmospheric conditions.

Beyond temperatures, weather advisories are also raising awareness of pollen levels, particularly as the beginning of the pollen season is coinciding with the forecasted changes. “For those with pollen sensitivities, be aware as light amounts are already being observed,” said KRY Yamaguchi Broadcasting. This adds another layer of concern for individuals sensitive to allergens.

Travelers and outdoor enthusiasts should exercise caution this weekend. Snow and ice hazards could impact road conditions, particularly where snowfall accumulates. Mountain main roads may also see ice formation, prompting warnings from meteorological authorities for utmost caution.

Forecasts indicate no immediate expectation of extreme cold waves seen earlier, but temperatures will likely remain low for the foreseeable future as we continue through February.

This weekend's forecast reflects the unpredictable nature of Japan's winter—while spring is inching closer with longer days, the country will still need to brace itself against cold reminders of the season.
