James Van Der Beek has been open about his battle against colorectal cancer, a diagnosis he received in November 2024 that has impacted both his physical and emotional health. Each year, around 2 billion people worldwide face a similar diagnosis, and the actor candidly shared his journey on social media, stating he felt optimistic despite the challenges.
In a November 2024 interview with People, Van Der Beek revealed the details surrounding his diagnosis, noting he began to notice health changes in the summer of 2023 which led to a colonoscopy. “As I was coming out of the haze, the gastroenterologist said in his most pleasant bedside manner, ‘It is cancer,’” he recalled, sharing that he went into shock upon hearing the news. The diagnosis was stage 3 colorectal cancer, localized yet serious.
Van Der Beek emphasized that coping with cancer felt like taking on a full-time job, as he had to keep track of numerous appointments, tests, and treatment plans. Yet, amidst the struggle, he found reasons to remain hopeful. “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good,” he stated during his interview.
With six children—Olivia, 14, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 11, Emilia, 8, Gwendolyn, 6, and Jeremiah, 3—Van Der Beek often reflects on the support and strength of his family throughout this journey. “My kids have been so supportive, loving, and tender,” he expressed, acknowledging the bittersweet reality of parenting while facing a serious illness. “It’s heartwarming and also devastating,” he said.
He also noted that while his children are understandably scared for his health, the situation has allowed for deeper family connections and conversations about fears and feelings. He shared a humorous moment, joking about the struggle to get his kids to stop referring to his illness as “butt cancer,” a term they found amusing.
The actor's wife, Kimberly, has played a crucial role in helping him navigate the emotional challenges. Van Der Beek gushed about her support in a November 2024 post: “I’m in awe of you, @vanderkimberly,” acknowledging her unconditional love and devotion during a tough time. “I've asked every doctor I’ve had, ‘What are the odds — and you be straight with me — that I can get my kids to stop calling it butt cancer?”
Financial concerns can weigh heavily on families facing cancer, and Van Der Beek took action by selling limited editions of his Varsity Blues jersey, pledging that 100% of the net proceeds would go to families dealing with the burdens of cancer, including his own. He shared this initiative on a since-deleted Instagram post in November 2024.
In a collaborative effort to raise awareness, Van Der Beek participated in Fox’s December 2024 special, The Real Full Monty, where he stripped down alongside other celebrities to promote cancer testing and research. “I learned just how much I really value a good group to not go through something on your own,” he reflected, emphasizing the importance of seeking help and fostering connections.
Despite maintaining his physical health, Van Der Beek admitted that the mental toll has been significant. “Emotionally, you know, it’s a lot. It’s really a ride,” he said during a December 2024 appearance on Good Morning America. He noted the shock and disbelief that accompanied his diagnosis, as it altered his perspective and priorities for the year.
Van Der Beek has expressed gratitude for the support of his father throughout his journey, especially following the passing of his mother, Melinda, in July 2020. In a heartfelt Instagram post for his father’s birthday in January 2025, he shared, “The way you have shown up when I’ve been down and out this year ... has been not just life-saving, but life affirming.”
In March 2025, Van Der Beek celebrated his 48th birthday with a reflection on life and mortality. “I came nose to nose with death,” he expressed emotionally. This journey has forced him to reevaluate his identity and what it means to live fully. “I am worthy of God’s love, simply because I exist,” he reiterated to his followers, highlighting the importance of self-acceptance and love.
Through this profound experience, Van Der Beek continues to inspire others with his candidness about cancer, emphasizing the need for awareness, support, and human connection in the face of life’s challenges.
