In a November 2024 interview with People, Van Der Beek revealed the details surrounding his diagnosis, noting he began to notice health changes in the summer of 2023 which led to a colonoscopy. “As I was coming out of the haze, the gastroenterologist said in his most pleasant bedside manner, ‘It is cancer,’” he recalled, sharing that he went into shock upon hearing the news. The diagnosis was stage 3 colorectal cancer, localized yet serious.
Van Der Beek emphasized that coping with cancer felt like taking on a full-time job, as he had to keep track of numerous appointments, tests, and treatment plans. Yet, amidst the struggle, he found reasons to remain hopeful. “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good,” he stated during his interview.
With six children—Olivia, 14, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 11, Emilia, 8, Gwendolyn, 6, and Jeremiah, 3—Van Der Beek often reflects on the support and strength of his family throughout this journey. “My kids have been so supportive, loving, and tender,” he expressed, acknowledging the bittersweet reality of parenting while facing a serious illness. “It’s heartwarming and also devastating,” he said.
