James Harden Shines With 50 Points, Clippers Defeat Pistons

The All-Star guard credits President Obama’s presence for his remarkable performance.

James Harden delivered one of the most electrifying performances of his career on March 5, 2025, leading the Los Angeles Clippers to a decisive 123-115 victory over the Detroit Pistons with 50 points. Harden’s remarkable showing came during the team's first home game at the Intuit Dome after a challenging 21-day stretch without being at home.

The Clippers were desperate for a win, having lost six of their last seven games. Just the night before, they had suffered a devastating defeat to the Phoenix Suns, relinquishing a 23-point lead. Harden stepped up when the team needed him the most, especially with key players like Norman Powell sidelined due to injury and Kawhi Leonard resting on the second night of back-to-back fixtures.

Harden's performance was nothing short of historic. Scoring his 50 points with incredible efficiency, he shot 14-of-24 from the field, made six 3-pointers, and converted 16 of his 20 free throw attempts. Notably, he scored 23 points just in the first quarter, demonstrating dominance right from the start. His 50-point game not only marked the first he has achieved as a member of the Clippers but also the 24th of his career, bringing him within one of Kobe Bryant for the third-most 50-point games in NBA history.

It was also noteworthy for the 35-year-old Harden as he became the second-oldest player to score 50 points on zero days' rest, only behind Stephen Curry, who accomplished this feat about four months his senior.

“To see him come out and score 50 on a back-to-back at the age of 35 just says a lot about him,” expressed Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue. “We needed every bit of it.”

The game gained additional buzz because of the attendance of former President Barack Obama, who sat courtside next to Clippers owner Steve Ballmer. After the game, Harden humorously remarked, "I wanted my picture with the President after the game, but he left. I guess he wanted to beat traffic. We've got a pretty cool relationship.” He emphasized the positive influence of seeing Obama at the game, saying he felt it was "probably the reason I played so well."

Despite this jubilant victory, Harden reflected on the day with mixed emotions, mourning the sudden passing of Congressman Sylvester Turner, with whom he had shared meaningful ties during his time playing for the Houston Rockets. “He was a great human being,” Harden said somberly. “We’d done a lot of great things for the community. It’s sad.”

The Clippers are now positioned with their record at 33-29, providing them some momentum as they push toward the playoffs. This performance from Harden could be pivotal as they look to stabilize what had become a tumultuous season. Harden’s prolific scoring capability is necessary for the team to pursue their goals, as seen from this game and the historic achievement attached to it.

“I can do it, you know,” Harden reiterated confidently, reflecting on his experience of scoring 50 points. “It’s not my first time.” This assertion serves as not only a statement of confidence but also of his commitment to lead the Clippers back to their winning ways.
