JAL Launches New Gundam Jet Domestic Flight

Japan Airlines begins operations of the special Gundam-themed aircraft to promote the Osaka-Kansai Expo.

Japan Airlines (JAL) has officially launched its special aircraft, dubbed the 'JAL Gundam Jet,' which commenced domestic flight operations on March 3, 2025. This Boeing 737-800, registered as JA342J, undertook its inaugural flight, JAL451, from Tokyo's Haneda Airport to Tokushima, marking the beginning of unique travel experiences for fans and travelers alike.

The launch coincides with Japan's upcoming International Expo, the Osaka-Kansai Expo, scheduled for April 13, 2025. This initiative operates under the joint partnership between JAL and Bandai Namco Holdings, named the 'JAL×GUNDAM FLY TO THE FUTURE PROJECT,' which aims to attract attention to the Expo through innovative travel and experiential marketing.

The new aircraft design includes notable visuals of the RX-78F00/E Gundam, particularly showcased on the tail, paired with images of the official Expo mascot, Myakumyaku, near the front of the aircraft. These stunning designs not only reflect the high-tech persona of the Gundam franchise but also symbolize Japan's commitment to its rich pop culture and technological advancement.

For this special livery, each side of the aircraft is adorned with different artwork, incorporating various promotional themes. Specifically, the Gundam's iconic silhouette spans over 25 meters high and is complemented by vibrant colors meant to catch the eye of enthusiasts and potential travelers. On the left side, there are 46 decals, and on the right, 48 decals, creating a visually dynamic effect as the aircraft travels across the sky.

JAL has also planned various promotions alongside the Gundam Jet, including limited-edition Gundam merchandise available on board and themed experiences during the Expo period. JAL's Executive Officer and West Japan Branch Manager, Kumiko Miyasaka, shared her enthusiasm about the project, stating, "With this Gundam project, we hope to connect Japan and the world." These words underline not just the commercial aspect of the initiative but also the cultural and emotional ties envisaged through such collaborations.

To mark this historic occasion, passengers on the inaugural flight received commemorative gifts from the JAL staff, who were excited to be part of this landmark event. On the first day's operations, the JAL Gundam Jet not only completed its initial flight to Tokushima but also returned to Haneda before flying to Matsuyama, efficiently showcasing the new promotional initiative across major domestic routes.

The aircraft is expected to continue its special operations until November 2025, with additional flights and collaborations anticipated as the Expo date approaches. Flight schedules and details will be available on the JAL website, ensuring easy access for fans and travelers hoping to catch a flight aboard this unique aircraft.

Beyond just air travel, plans are laid out for the 'JAL×GUNDAM FLY TO THE FUTURE PROJECT' to extend its influence through themed restaurant buses featuring similar designs. This feature promises to deliver immersive experiences both on and off the ground, augmenting the visibility of one of Japan's most beloved entertainment franchises.

Overall, the 'JAL Gundam Jet' stands as a symbolic presence for the innovation and creativity intrinsic to Japan's identity, especially as it steps forward to showcase its culture and advancements during the significant global event of the Osaka-Kansai Expo.

JAL's introduction of the Gundam Jet follows previous collaborative endeavors, reiterative of their commitment to intertwining travel with cultural themes. With excitement set to build as more offerings are announced, passengers and fans are eager to see how this project will evolve and the other unique experiences JAL will bring to the skies.

For now, the 'JAL Gundam Jet' serves as both an aircraft and cultural ambassador, ready to soar with imagination and innovation, embodying the spirit of collaboration between two powerful elements of modern Japanese society – travel and entertainment.
