Jack Fincham, the reality TV star known for winning Love Island, has been granted bail as he appeals his recent six-week jail sentence following his guilty plea related to two dog attack incidents. The 32-year-old appeared at Southend-on-Sea Magistrates' Court on January 29, 2025, where he pleaded guilty to being in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog, which resulted in injuries to two individuals.
The first incident occurred back in September 2022 when Fincham’s black cane corso, named Elvis, was reported to have bitten Robert Sudell, a runner, resulting in injury. Initially, Sudell accepted Fincham’s apology, and it seemed the celebrity would receive just cautions and be required to complete responsible dog ownership coursework. Yet, the situation took a turn after another unreported incident in June 2024, which happened under similar circumstances. Although no serious injuries were reported during the latter event, it was enough to warrant charges against Fincham.
Fincham, who was already serving under a suspended sentence for unrelated driving offenses at the time, appeared shaken during the court proceedings. Presiding magistrate Anne Wade expressed serious concern, stating, "The dog was in a public place not abiding by the conditions to be muzzled and kept on a lead,” stressing the importance of adhering to safety conditions set for Fincham’s pet.
Following the sentencing, emotional scenes unfolded, particularly as Fincham’s on-and-off girlfriend, Chloe Brockett, reportedly broke down in tears. Fincham was ordered to pay £3,680, which includes £200 compensation for Sudell, as well as additional financial burdens related to the dog's care and legal fees. His attorney, Richard Cooper, informed the court of Fincham's financial struggles, stating, "He has no savings," but facilitated the arrangement of monthly payments as part of his release conditions.
Upon receiving bail, Fincham displayed mixed emotions, giving the thumbs up before being escorted to the cells. His conditional release means he must uphold specific requirements, including ensuring Elvis is muzzled and on-lead when outside, and the dog should not be left alone with anyone under the age of 16.
Essex Police's Sergeant Alex Watkins conveyed strong sentiments about the responsibility of dog owners following Fincham's case, highlighting, "Owners have to take responsibility for their dogs, and on these occasions this dog was dangerously out of control." Watkins also reiterated the opportunities Fincham had been provided to rectify the situation prior to sentencing, indicating the court feels strongly about enforcing regulations on pet ownership to guard public safety. “On both occasions, the owner was gave the chance to rectify their behaviour with words of advice and conditional caution—but failed to do so,” Watkins remarked.
The weight of public interest looms over this case, not just because of Fincham's celebrity status, but for the broader conversation about dog ownership ethics and the responsibility underlying it. Just weeks ago, Fincham had been basking in shared social moments with Brockett, and now faces potentially life-altering legal repercussions due to the behavior of his pet.
For Fincham, who first shot to fame alongside Dani Dyer on Love Island back in 2018, the sentiments of being a public figure add layers of complexity as he faces these allegations. One small incident with his dog has escalated, shedding light on both his actions and the tragic potential outcomes of irresponsible pet ownership.
This case is more than just the story of Fincham, it draws attention to the need for stricter regulations concerning the ownership of certain dog breeds and the responsibilities placed on their owners. The legal ramifications could incite changes or discussions around how society perceives the boundaries of pet ownership and public safety, and whether current legislation sufficiently protects both people and animals.
Fincham's appeal is slated to be reviewed, and as the proceedings continue, many will be watching closely to see how this celebrity case may influence legislation around dog ownership moving forward. It becomes apparent with every twist and turn of this saga, both the charming allure and grave responsibility wrapped within the fabric of fame.
