Jack Black And Jason Momoa Unite For Minecraft Movie

The film, set to release on April 4, celebrates creativity and nostalgia for video game fans.

Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Emma Myers recently reunited in Mexico to promote the upcoming film A Minecraft Movie, scheduled for release on April 4, 2025. This movie marks the first cinematic adaptation of the popular block-building video game, and the trio gathered for a press conference that celebrated the film's creative spirit and its imaginative characters.

The film, which stays true to the essence of Minecraft, features characters working to survive in a fantastical world by utilizing tools and their imagination. Jack Black, who plays the role of Steve, expressed his excitement about returning to Mexico, a place he first visited two decades ago while filming the cult classic Nacho Libre. "I want to say one thing: about 20 years ago, I and Jared were here to shoot 'Nacho Libre,' and it is a pleasure to be with you all," said director Jared Hess, who also directed Black in Nacho Libre.

The nostalgia didn't stop there as Hess shared his fond memories of filming in Oaxaca, Mexico, where the original movie was shot in 2005 and premiered in June 2006. The connection between these two projects illustrates the lasting impact of their shared experiences in film.

In this new adventure, Jason Momoa joins Black for the first time, playing Garett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, an expert in retro consoles. Their enthusiasm for the project was evident, as both actors reflected on the joy of working together. Black recalled his eagerness to collaborate with Momoa: "When I heard I was going to be in ‘Minecraft,’ I could not wait to get to set to work with him. But I wasn’t sure if he felt the same about me, so before I jumped in, I slid into his DMs on Instagram and asked, 'Is it true? Are we doing this?' And he replied right away, 'Yes, brother, let’s do Minecraft.'"

This cheerful exchange showcases the camaraderie and excitement within the cast, particularly for Momoa, who shared his admiration for Black: "This is my first comedy. I’ve been a huge fan of [Black] for many years, so it’s really a dream come true… Jared was part of the project too, of course, and 'Nacho Libre' is one of my favorites. I watched it last night; how weird, I’m a terrible nerd; it’s fantastic!"

Momoa's character and Black's character, Steve, navigate a world filled with adventure and challenges, echoing elements familiar to fans of the video game. Black described Steve as an eccentric artist who loathes his mundane job but is adept at mastering the Minecraft world. Together, they embody the spirit of the game—filled with creativity and resilience.

Alongside Black and Momoa, the press conference included actors Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson, all of whom shared insights about the film. They assured audiences that familiarity with the game isn’t required to enjoy the film, highlighting the movie's family-friendly nature.

In addition to the fantastical animation, the set design pays homage to the game's distinctive square aesthetics. The art department crafted more than 20 giant cubic trees, tools, swords, and crafting tables that mirror the game's iconic elements. "The first time I walked onto the set, I was completely blown away," said Hansen, who plays young Henry. "I’ve played Minecraft forever; it was my whole childhood, and it’s incredible… I never expected it to be so beautiful; it’s just a game, just blocks, but I think this will always be a great experience for me because this is my first big production."

The dedication of the filmmakers to crafting an immersive world reflects a profound respect for the source material. The film aims to appeal to a wide audience, from long-time fans to newcomers curious about the Minecraft universe.

With the film's release just around the corner, anticipation builds not only for the adaptation of the beloved video game but also to see how these talented actors bring their characters to life in a story that celebrates creativity, friendship, and adventure. As the premiere approaches, excitement surrounds the project, promising an adventurous journey for all.
