Iztapalapa Prepares For 182nd Viacrucis De Iztapalapa

Thousands set to witness the dramatic reenactment of the Passion of Christ this Semana Santa.

As Semana Santa unfolds across Mexico, the Viacrucis de Iztapalapa is set to captivate thousands in the capital's eastern borough with its dramatic reenactment of the Passion of Christ. This year’s event, marking its 182nd representation, is scheduled from April 13 to April 20, 2025, with the main procession taking place on Viernes Santo, April 18.

The Viacrucis de Iztapalapa is renowned for its emotional depth and historical significance, having been celebrated at least since 1843. Each year, it draws immense crowds, with participants and spectators alike gathering to witness the portrayal of Jesus’ final moments. This year, the event will cover a 10-kilometer route through eight traditional neighborhoods: San Lucas, San Pablo, San Pedro, San José, Asunción, Santa Bárbara, San Ignacio, and San Miguel.

Activities are set to officially commence at 13:00 hours on April 18, with a gathering starting at 10:00 hours. Those unable to attend in person can follow the event live on social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and Twitch, as well as on local television channels like Foro TV and TV Azteca.

In preparation for the influx of attendees, the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) has announced road closures in Iztapalapa on the day of the event. Streets affected include Avenida 5 de Mayo, Calzada Ermita Iztapalapa, Avenida Toltecas, General Anaya, Porfirio Díaz, Avenida Javier Rojo Gómez, Luis Hidalgo Monrroy, Vicente Guerrero, Eje 6 Sur, Camino Real San Lorenzo, San Felipe de Jesús, Torres Quintero, Trabajadores Sociales, and Tercer Anillo de Circunvalación. As a result, authorities recommend using alternative routes to navigate the area.

The Viacrucis begins its journey on Jueves Santo, April 17, when various religious activities kick off, culminating in the reenactment of pivotal moments from the Gospels. This year, the Oración del Huerto will take place at the Cerro de la Estrella, where the dramatic tension builds as Jesus confronts the temptations of Luzbel, ultimately leading to his betrayal.

Israel Domínguez, a 50-year-old actor, reprises his role as Judas Iscariote, a character pivotal to the narrative of betrayal. Domínguez’s portrayal is particularly poignant as he navigates the emotional turmoil of selling Jesus for thirty pieces of silver, a moment that resonates deeply within the themes of sacrifice and redemption.

Meanwhile, José Julio Olivares, an economics student from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), takes on the role of Jesús de Nazaret. Olivares will depict the Last Supper, where Jesus shares bread and wine with his disciples, signifying the establishment of the Eucharist. As he announces that one among them will betray him, the tension escalates, leading to Judas's departure from the gathering.

The representation also includes a reenactment of the First Great Sanhedrin against Jesus, where the religious leaders seek testimony to condemn him. This moment underscores the political and social tensions of the time, illustrating the conflict between Jesus and the established religious authorities.

Following the procession through Iztapalapa’s neighborhoods, the narrative reaches a climax with Jesus being presented at his first trial. This poignant moment serves as a reminder of the injustices faced by those who challenge the status quo.

The Viacrucis de Iztapalapa is not merely a theatrical performance; it is a deeply ingrained cultural and spiritual event that brings the community together in reflection and devotion. Each year, it serves as a reminder of the core tenets of faith, sacrifice, and community solidarity.

As the event approaches, excitement builds among locals and visitors alike. The streets of Iztapalapa will be filled with the sounds of preparation, as participants don costumes and rehearse their lines, ready to bring the story of Christ’s passion to life once more.

For many, attending the Viacrucis is an annual tradition, a way to connect with their faith and community. It is an opportunity to reflect on the themes of love, sacrifice, and redemption that are central to the Easter narrative. As crowds gather, the spirit of unity and devotion will be palpable, echoing through the streets of Iztapalapa.

The Viacrucis de Iztapalapa remains a powerful testament to the enduring nature of faith and the importance of community in commemorating significant events. As the procession unfolds, it will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on all who participate or witness it.
