ITVX Acquires Lion Forge's Iyanu Series

Premiering this summer, the animated series brings Nigerian mythology to U.K. audience through ITVX.

ITVX has closed a deal to stream Iyanu, Lion Forge Entertainment's animated series drawing upon Nigerian mythology, promising to captivate audiences with its rich storytelling.

The acquisition of exclusive video-on-demand (VOD) rights for the United Kingdom and non-exclusive rights for the Republic of Ireland has set the stage for Yianu's anticipated premiere this Summer. Adapted from the graphic novel series by Roye Okupe, Iyanu: Child of Wonder, the series is poised to resonate with viewers, particularly with its unique cultural touches.

Produced by Lion Forge Entertainment, known for the Oscar-winning short Hair Love, Iyanu is helmed by Okupe as its creator, executive producer, and showrunner. The series, centering around the adventures of Iyanu, depicts her transformation from orphan to heroine as she navigates the magical kingdom of Yorubaland.

Set against the backdrop of Nigerian culture, music, and mythology, the animated series follows Iyanu as she studies history and ancient arts, only to awaken long-dormant divine powers. Accompanied by allies including Biyi, Toye, and the magical leopard Ekun, Iyanu embarks on a quest to confront the looming threat and discover her purpose.

Leading the all-African voice cast is award-winning actress Serah Johnson, who brings the character of Iyanu to life. The cast also includes notable Nollywood stars such as Adesua Etomi-Wellington, recognized as a Vogue U.S. cover star and African Movie Academy Awards winner, as well as Stella Damasus and Blossom Chukwujekwu.

The writers’ room is filled with talent such as story editor Brandon Easton and Emmy winner Kerri Grant, ensuring the series maintains high artistic standards. The executive production team brings together experts from Lion Forge, YouNeek Studios, and other media groups, reflecting a collaborative effort to create this unique series.

“We’re so proud to have ITVX as the home for Iyanu across the U.K.,” said David Steward II from Lion Forge Entertainment. “ITV are amazing partners and fully recognize the potential of the Iyanu franchise, and we have a shared vision for success.”

Darren Nartey, Senior Acquisitions Manager at ITV, echoed this sentiment, stating, “We are very pleased to be bringing the wonderful Iyanu to the U.K. Our ITVX viewers are in for a treat.”

Iyanu is set to launch this Spring, featuring 26 episodes of 22 minutes each, and is already positioned for U.S. audiences on Cartoon Network and Max. There is also existing distribution through Showmax for viewers across 44 countries throughout Africa.

This animated series aims to spark interest by beautifully weaving Nigerian mythology with modern storytelling techniques, and its unique cultural insights could pave the way for greater representation within animated genres. By championing African stories, Iyanu not only entertains but also educates its audience about rich traditions and legendary narratives.

With such exciting developments, hopes are high for Iyanu to resonate with viewers from diverse backgrounds and become a beloved series both domestically and internationally.
