Italy Celebrates 80th Anniversary Of Liberation Day

Cities across Italy host events honoring the fight against fascism and promoting freedom

On April 25, 2025, cities across Italy will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Italy from Nazi-fascism, a pivotal moment in the nation’s history. This year, the celebrations will include a variety of events designed to honor the sacrifices made by partisans and to promote the values of democracy and freedom.

In Turin, the city is offering an extensive program of activities, organized in collaboration with cultural institutions and associations. The day's events will kick off with a wreath-laying ceremony at partisan landmarks and an official ceremony at the Martinetto shrine. The procession will begin at 10:00 AM from Corso Siccardi, culminating in a public event at Piazza Castello, where representatives from the ANPI (National Association of Italian Partisans), local unions, and institutions will address the crowd.

Evening festivities will feature live music and staged readings in theaters and social spaces, with the procession continuing to the Bocciofila Cavorettese after institutional speeches. Notable events include the 'Liberation Ball' at the MAUTO National Automobile Museum at 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM, where the Gianpaolo Petrini Big Band and the JcT Big Band will perform. Admission is free but requires prior reservation.

Additionally, the 'Swing of the Liberation' event will take place at the Museo del Risorgimento at 12:00 PM, featuring performances by CFM Singing Students and the CFM Ellington Band, showcasing timeless melodies and the evolution of jazz. Participation will be included with museum admission until capacity is reached.

Another unique event, 'Liberation is a Race', will start at 2:30 PM from Caserma La Marmora, offering a guided walk that recounts post-war Turin through the eyes of a partisan. This event is free with prior reservation, and participants are encouraged to bring headphones to follow the narrative.

Further activities include a theatrical performance titled 'Songs of Freedom' at the Sacrario del Martinetto at 11:00 AM, and a guided tour called 'Mille papaveri rossi' at Via Baltea 3, which tells the stories of partisans who fought for Turin's freedom, followed by a communal lunch.

Meanwhile, in Latina, the city is preparing for its own observances with a tone of solemnity due to the national mourning for the death of Pope Francis, which has been declared until April 26. The ceremony for the 80th anniversary will take place in Borgo Faiti, commencing at 10:30 AM. This event, organized by the Prefecture, will include the laying of a commemorative wreath at the monument to the fallen in Piazza San Paolo Apostolo. Messages from local leaders, including the president of Anci and Latina's mayor Matilde Celentano, will be delivered to the citizens.

To ensure the safety of the celebrations, the Municipality of Latina has implemented traffic and parking restrictions in the Borgo Faiti area from 8:00 AM on April 25 until the ceremony concludes.

In Rome, the capital is set to host a variety of events celebrating Liberation Day. The Festa della Resistenza 2025, running from April 25 to April 27, will take place in the San Lorenzo district—a significant site of partisan struggle. Over 80 free events are planned, including lessons, meetings, performances, concerts, readings, screenings, and activities for children.

The ANPI Roma will also hold celebrations on April 25, starting with a tribute to the martyrs of the Fosse Ardeatine at 8:30 AM. Following this, a procession will march from Largo Bompiani to Parco Schuster, featuring music, art, and theater, followed by a Liberation lunch and a march to Porta San Paolo to honor partisans at the Memorial of the Resistance.

In addition to these historical commemorations, Rome will host the FloraCult market at the Casali del Pino from April 25 to April 27, featuring over 160 exhibitors showcasing rare botanical collections, garden furniture, and sustainable crafts. The event will also include workshops, installations, and cultural experiences.

For food enthusiasts, the Tiburtina TTS Street Food festival will transform a section of Via Tiburtina into a pedestrian street food village from April 25 to 27, offering a vibrant culinary experience.

Another major event, the Festival of the Orient, will take place at the Nuova Fiera di Roma from April 25 to April 27, showcasing the rich cultures of countries like Japan, India, and China through performances and exhibitions.

On the outskirts of Rome, the Hippie Market will be held in Marino, offering handmade and vintage items, street food, and creative workshops for children.

In Canterano, the 'Cioccolato in Quota' event will celebrate chocolate with a sensory journey through flavors and local culinary traditions, providing a sweet addition to the day’s festivities.

Lastly, the art exhibition 'Canto Libero' by Vittorio Tapparini will highlight women's issues through vibrant paintings, emphasizing the importance of female representation in contemporary discourse.

This year’s Liberation Day celebrations not only honor the historical significance of the event but also promote cultural engagement, community spirit, and the enduring values of freedom and democracy across Italy.
