The Italian Civil Protection Department has issued a serious weather alert as heavy rain and snow are set to impact various regions across the country, leading to potential hydrogeological and hydraulic risks.
According to the department, based on the forecasts available, adverse weather conditions are anticipated to culminate especially on February 25, 2023. The alert covers areas such as Liguria, Piemonte, Lombardia, as well as the central regions including Toscana, Umbria, and Lazio. By the evening, the weather phenomena are expected to reach as far as the extreme northeastern regions, Campania, and Puglia.
"... il Dipartimento della Protezione Civile d’intesa con le regioni coinvolte ha emesso un avviso di condizioni meteorologiche avverse," stated the Civil Protection Department, highlighting the coordination between their office and regional governments which are tasked with activating local emergency response systems.
Residents are being urged to prepare for significant weather changes. The forecast points to heavy rainfall and intensified snowfall across the mountains, with strong winds particularly expected on Wednesday following the onset of the Mediterranean vortex forming near Italy.
Initially, the meteorological disturbance is expected to be active from Tuesday afternoon, gaining intensity by evening. The types of precipitation are likely to include downpours and thunderstorms, with some areas potentially facing hailstorms due to cold air influx from France.
On Tuesday, the North will experience overcast skies, with light rains intermittently increasing across Piemonte and higher areas of Lombardia, extending to Liguria by evening. The western Alps will see substantial snowfall above 1200/1400 meters. The central region will have variable cloudiness with isolated showers intensifying by night, particularly affecting Toscana and later Lazio as well.
On the following day, the North may see openings of clear skies with continued instability elsewhere, with forecasts indicating strong and often intense rainfall, particularly between low Veneto and Emilia Romagna. The Alpine areas will continue to receive snowfall at similar elevations, resulting in dangerous conditions on mountain passes and roads.
The Civil Protection Department maintains responsibility for monitoring these weather patterns. Regular updates will be provided through their official website, where individuals can consult national bulletins summarizing the state of vulnerability and weather alerts.
Hence, with the substantial risk associated with this influx of adverse weather, citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and informed. Strong winds, rainfall, and the possibility of thunderstorms raise significant concerns, and this alert serves as a timely reminder of the potential hazards prevalent during this changeable weather period.
Individuals living and traveling through affected areas are advised to check updates regularly and follow any instructions provided by local authorities to safeguard themselves during this period of inclement weather.
