Italian Regional Exports Gain Momentum With Collaboration

Innovative initiatives help local companies penetrate international markets and showcase cultural excellence.

When itcomes to promoting regional exports, Italy's approach is increasingly focused on collaboration and innovation. A new initiative dubbed 'Made in Lecco' has been launched to showcase the manufacturing excellence of the Lecco province beyond national borders. This collaboration, presented at Confapi Lecco Sondrio, aims to unify local businesses under one brand, making them more recognizable and appealing to international markets.

At the heart of this initiative is the desire to boost the local economy by capitalizing on the strengths of its diverse industries. Currently, eleven pioneer companies have joined the 'Made in Lecco' program, engaging sectors ranging from metalworking to plastics and mechanical processing. Marco Piazza, director of Confapi Lecco Sondrio, emphasized during the launch, "The project started with the intention of developing foreign markets and has proven to be a winning bet. This new endeavor arises from the necessity of businesses to group together within a recognizable framework to highlight the industrial capacity of our region."

One of the noted benefits of this initiative is the establishment of resources for participating companies to engage more effectively with international buyers. This includes the development of a multi-language website, www.madeinlecco.it, providing detailed profiles of each business, and facilitating joint participation at national and international trade fairs. The first event under this initiative will be the Mecspe fair, dedicated to mechanical subcontracting, held from March 5 to 7, and later at Blechexpo, another significant event focused on sheet metal processing.

Simultaneously, innovation within individual firms continues to thrive. Take Spi Finestre, for example, which has grown tremendously since its inception in 1985 by emphasizing product quality, excellent service, and the value of its human capital. Rocco Mangione, co-CEO and part of the second-generation leadership, commented, "Today, we are probably the only Italian company exporting windows across the ocean. Our strategy has made the difference, focusing on direct approaches, tailor-made products, and customer service rather than overly complex projects." Under Rocco's leadership since 2017, Spi Finestre has expanded its operations to include branches in the United States and Libya, showcasing its products on the international stage.

Recent investments have also included around 10 million euros on machinery to boost both quality and productivity, yielding innovations like the Origin window, which deviates from the current market trends favoring PVC and aluminum windows by reinvigorate traditional wooden options. This willingness to innovate, combined with sustainable practices such as installing photovoltaic parks and minimizing plastic use, positions Spi Finestre as not just another company, but as a leader committed to both growth and environmental responsibility.

Similarly, Fiasconaro, another illustrious name from Sicily, has made significant strides globally with its traditional seasonal offerings like the Colomba and Panettone. Founded in 1953, this pastry powerhouse boasts revenues exceeding 34 million euros and employs around 180 workers. Its products have reached tables around the world, from the Vatican to heads of state and even aboard space shuttles. The company's growth has been anchored on the principles of excellence and deep-rooted territoriality within its operations, with 70% of its wealth now generated across significant markets, including North America and Asia.

Fiasconaro's commitment to authenticity is exemplified through its use of local ingredients, such as the esteemed 'Pesca di Leonforte IGP,' ensuring each product reflects the rich cultural heritage of Sicily. Adapting to global taste preferences, the company continues to explore new product lines and establish its presence across Asia as part of its strategic international ambitions.

Both Spi Finestre and Fiasconaro exemplify how the collaboration among companies within specific regions and their commitment to innovation can drive exports and promote Italian craftsmanship globally. While each company's strategy may differ—Spi Finestre with its focus on tailor-made window solutions and Fiasconaro with its enchanting pastries—the common thread remains clear: prioritizing quality and sustainability is key to standing out on the world stage.

With the increasing complexity of international markets, the shared initiatives like 'Made in Lecco' provide substantial avenues for smaller companies to collaborate and thrive amid growing competition. Matilde Petracca, secretary-general of Confartigianato Imprese Lecco, aptly stated, "Internationalization is no longer a strategic choice, but rather a mandatory path for businesses to take." This sentiment resonates strongly across the board, as companies strive to redefine their positions and realize the potential within the international marketplace.

Looking forward, the collaborative drive and innovative spirit demonstrated by these companies not only stand to bolster their respective export capabilities but also spotlight the strength of Italian manufacturing as we navigate new global paradigms. The focus remains on fostering networks, enhancing visibility, and tapping collaborative strengths to cater to the ever-evolving needs of international consumers.
