Israel Conducts Air Strikes On Yemen Amid Houthi Tensions

The latest military action targets Sanaa Airport and power stations as Houthi missile strikes escalate against Israel.

Israel has renewed its military strikes against targets in Yemen, including airstrikes on the capital's international airport, Sanaa, on Thursday, following recent missile attacks from Houthi rebels directed at Israeli territory. The Israeli military confirmed its actions, stating the strikes aimed at facilities allegedly used by the Houthis for military purposes, particularly those linked to Iranian support.

The assault on Sanaa International Airport coincided with the visit of Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), who reported he was preparing to board a flight when the bombing occurred. He confirmed his personal safety, as well as the safety of his team, but noted, “At least two people were reported killed at the airport.” This attack adds to the tragic toll of four fatalities and 21 injuries reported by Yemen's Ministry of Health and the Houthi-controlled news outlet.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, addressing the nation shortly after the airstrikes, claimed, “We are determined to cut this branch of terrorism from the Iranian axis of evil. We will continue until the job is done.” This statement reflects Israel’s broader military strategy targeting Iranian-backed groups operating outside its borders, particularly following the uptick of Houthi missile strikes against Israeli cities, including the notable attack on Tel Aviv which wounded 16 people.

The background to these hostilities reveals Israel’s concern about Houthi capabilities, which have grown aggressively since the start of the Gaza conflict, with reports indicating increased missile and drone attacks aimed at Israeli cities. The Israeli military accused the Houthis of leveraging civilian infrastructure for military objectives and serving as proxies for Iranian interests, a narrative frequently echoed during Israeli attacks on Gaza and Lebanon.

The Iranian connection to Houthi militia activities has intensified geopolitical tensions across the region. With Israel asserting it will strike any threat, it highlights its willingness to operate far beyond its borders to secure its defense. This operation marks the second wave of attacks on Houthi targets within less than a week, underscoring Israel's resolve to respond decisively against any perceived threats to its security. The Houthis responded by accusing Israel of aggression, with prominent leaders stating they would escalate their missile attacks on Israel as long as its attacks on Palestinian territories continue. This retaliatory rhetoric signals risks of broader military engagements.

Journalism from Al Jazeera and other outlets indicates this is not the first time Sanaa International Airport has been targeted, and local experts suggest these attacks disrupt humanitarian efforts underway to assist war-torn Yemen, already suffering from one of the worst humanitarian crises globally. The international community, including the WHO’s involvement, raises ethical and operational concerns about the impacts of such military actions on health and humanitarian missions.

Following the recent escalation, Netanyahu's government faces mounting pressure not only to protect Israeli territory but also to address the humanitarian fallout of its military strategies abroad, which could complicate relations with allies. The attacks may also prompt global scrutiny and condemnations, reminiscent of responses to earlier conflicts involving Israeli military actions.

On the ground, activists and humanitarian organizations have voiced their concerns, emphasizing the dire conditions facing Yemeni civilians. The UN has reported deteriorations in health indices amid the conflict, and such military operations are amplifying the existing suffering. With competing narratives and the complex web of Middle Eastern politics at play, updated developments are closely watched by global analysts and diplomats.

The fallout from the airstrikes on Yemen signals not only immediate consequences for Israeli-Houthi relations but also broad ramifications for the entire region, effectively tying the local politics back to the larger narrative of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Iranian influence spreading across the Middle East. Only time will reveal the full impact of these strategic moves, but for now, tensions remain palpably high and the conflict appears far from resolution.
