Ishikawa Kasumi Reflects On Paris Olympics Silver Medal Journey

The former table tennis star shares her thoughts on Japan's performance and her own career transition post-retirement.

Former table tennis star Ishikawa Kasumi, who has proudly earned medals across three consecutive Olympic Games, returned to the spotlight during the "Paris Enthusiasm Special" aired on Fuji TV on November 22, reflecting on Japan's silver medal victory in Women's Team Table Tennis at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Ishikawa commented on the team’s impressive performance, stating, "I felt really happy, and they were so reliable. Watching the team play, I thought they surely wouldn’t lose until the finals. I could really feel Japan's level rising." Her insights highlighted both pride and optimism about the future of Japanese table tennis.

Having stepped away from competitive play last May, Ishikawa expressed mixed feelings about returning to the sport. When asked by the show’s staff if watching the young athletes made her want to return to competition, she chuckled and replied, "Hmm… no!" With refreshing candidness, she continued, "I thought to myself, 'there’s no way I could go back.' I felt such tension and realized how much things have changed since then." At the mere thought of re-entering competition, she noted, "Just walking onto the playing area made me feel nervous, even scared. It's amazing how different everything felt."

Ishikawa’s appearance as the Paris Olympics special caster has garnered significant attention, as she was able to connect with viewers not just as a former athlete but also as someone who deeply understands the intricacies of the pressure and excitement surrounding high-level sports. Her unique perspective allowed the audience to reflect on the thousands of hours of practice and dedication required to excel at the Olympic level.

A recognition of the growing talent pool among younger players was also evident. Ishikawa applauded her successors and emphasized their potential to soar even higher than her generation. "It’s truly uplifting to see how far they’ve come. The next generation is stepping up, and I have no doubt they will continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible," she remarked.

The former champion is not just resting on her past achievements; instead, she aims to inspire others by considering her next steps outside of table tennis. Ishikawa has expressed interest in potentially engaging more with sports as a commentator or mentor, providing younger players with the knowledge and insight she has accumulated throughout her career.

This recent chapter of her life, transitioning from athlete to broadcaster, showcases her adaptability and continuing dedication to the sport, even from the sidelines. With her infectious positivity and passion for table tennis, Ishikawa Kasumi remains committed to supporting the sport's growth and encouraging young athletes to chase their dreams fervently.

The impression she left during the special broadcast encapsulates not just her expert commentary but emphasizes the camaraderie within the sport, reminding us all of the importance of supporting one another on the path to greatness.
