Isack Hadjar's Emotional Crash Met With Support From Anthony Hamilton

After crashing out at the Australian Grand Prix, Isack Hadjar receives encouragement from Lewis Hamilton's father.

Isack Hadjar's debut at the Australian Grand Prix was both unforgettable and heartbreaking, as he crashed his Racing Bulls F1 car during the formation lap on March 16, 2025. Set to start from P11 on the grid at Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit, Hadjar’s excitement soon turned to despair when he lost control of his car at Turn 2, colliding violently with the barriers.

The race had begun under challenging wet conditions, making it especially hard for the rookie driver as torrential rain hammered the track. Unfortunately, Hadjar found himself facing slippery street markings, leading to his unfortunate spin and abrupt retirement. Following the crash, which left him visibly distraught, he was consoled by Anthony Hamilton, father of renowned F1 champion Lewis Hamilton. This heartfelt moment attracted significant attention, highlighting the emotional toll of motorsport.

“When I saw it happen, my heart just sank for him,” Anthony Hamilton told Sky Sports F1. “Not just for him, for his parents, for everything they’ve done to work hard to get to this one point, and it’s like, snatched from you. So I felt terrible for him, and I thought you know what, I need to go and tell this kid: 'keep your head high, walk tall, you're gonna come back'.” Hamilton believed strongly in Hadjar’s talent, noting, “I think he’s a phenomenal driver. I really do. I think there's more to come from Isack than we probably have seen this weekend.”

Hadjar, still processing the events, shared how much Hamilton's words meant to him. “It was nice from him; it means a lot knowing he knew who I was, how I felt,” Hadjar shared. “He told me to keep my head high and be proud, said I did well yesterday.” Despite his palpable disappointment, the young driver recognized Hamilton’s efforts to lift his spirits.

Yet, not everyone displayed compassion toward the rookie. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko criticized Hadjar's emotional display, calling it "a bit embarrassing" to witness. This starkly contrasting reaction drew attention, with many questioning the culture within some parts of the Formula 1 environment. Team principal Christian Horner, on the other hand, showed empathy, remarking, “It was quite heart-wrenching to see him so gutted... I think the positives he needs to take out of it when he reflects on the weekend, he performed very well through the practices and the qualifying.”

The juxtaposition of support from seasoned racers like Anthony Hamilton and the harsh criticisms from figures like Marko highlights the complex emotional dynamics within professional motorsport, particularly for young drivers. The highs of qualifying well and gaining entry onto the grid can swiftly turn to lows, as exemplified by Hadjar’s unfortunate debut. Hamilton noted the immense effort Hadjar has put forth, stating, “Hold your head high, man, because you’ve worked since you were eight years of age to get to this position. It’s one of the most devastating things, obviously, but there’s more to come.”

With Hadjar’s situation, the importance of camaraderie and mentorship within the racing community emerges as key themes. Experienced drivers and figures, like Hamilton, often lend their support to newcomers, offering insights and encouragement to help them navigate their careers. Anthony Hamilton reflected on the solidarity shared among racing parents, emphasizing the need for compassion toward everyone facing adversity: “It’s tough for him... All parents will have a feeling for him. He needed a hug, and I just felt I needed to do it.”

Looking forward, Isack Hadjar must regroup quickly as the second race of the season approaches next weekend in China. He faces new challenges and the expectations of both the team and the fans. The Racing Bulls camp, represented by team principal Laurent Mekies, assured Hadjar of their support and expressed confidence he would turn his frustration from this weekend’s events to positive energy moving forward. “We will be here to support him over the next few days before Shanghai and not let this cloud all the positives we can take from this weekend,” Mekies stated.

Hadjar, who previously stalled during the start line at the end of his F2 campaign, has already experienced the depths of disappointment and the pressures of high-stakes races. Still, with supportive figures like Hamilton by his side and the promise of growth, he has the potential to emerge from this challenging moment even stronger as he continues his racing career.
