Isabella Rossellini Cast As Suzanne Blum In Wallis Simpson Biopic

The actress joins Joan Collins in exploring the final years of the Duchess of Windsor.

Isabella Rossellini has been cast in the upcoming biopic titled The Bitter End, which portrays the life of Wallis Simpson, the American woman who famously led King Edward VIII to abdicate the throne. Directed by Mike Newell, known for Four Weddings and a Funeral, the film will also feature Joan Collins as Simpson.

Rossellini, who recently earned accolades for her role as Sister Agnes in Conclave, will play Suzanne Blum, Simpson's confidante and lawyer. Blum's complex relationship with Simpson is said to play a central role, exploring themes of obsession and coercive control, indicating the psychological depth of the narrative.

The script, penned by Louise Fennell, aims to unravel the final years of Wallis Simpson’s life—an American divorcee whose marriage to the British king changed the monarchy forever. “I am absolutely thrilled to join the incomparable Joan Collins and the brilliant Mike Newell in bringing this extraordinary story back to life,” Rossellini expressed, emphasizing the importance of Blum’s role in Simpson’s life and how their intertwined destinies shaped historical events.

Production for The Bitter End is scheduled to begin in May 2025, with filming taking place across the UK. John Gore Studios, which has been touted for its commitment to high-quality British films, is producing the project, with John Gore, Richard Holmes, and Francis Hopkinson at the helm. The film’s worldwide sales will be managed by Embankment Films.

Gore praised Rossellini’s talents, stating, “Isabella Rossellini possesses an immense and captivating talent, her ability to embody complex characters with depth and authenticity inspires audiences and elevates every story she tells.” Such endorsements highlight the excitement surrounding the project and the caliber of talent involved.

This casting news follows Rossellini’s impressive run during awards season, having received multiple nominations for Conclave at ceremonies like the BAFTAS and the Golden Globes. Her involvement with The Bitter End indicates her continued relevance and stature within the film industry.

Overall, The Bitter End is shaping up to be not just a biopic, but also a deep exploration of the human psyche, relationships, and the weight of history. With its intriguing premise and talented cast, it promises to deliver both dramatic and emotional depth when it hits theaters.
