Is A $150,000 Dog The Next Status Symbol?

A rare breed trained for protection and companionship has become the latest must-have for the elite

Amid the backdrop of Montana's picturesque snow-capped mountains, lies the headquarters of a unique canine training and breeding facility known as Svalinn. Renowned for producing elite protection dogs, Svalinn combines the ferocity required for guarding with the gentle nature suited for family life. With their price tag hitting an eye-watering $150,000, these dogs have become the latest status symbol among the world’s wealthiest individuals.

It all started at a farmers’ market in Bozeman. There, a brain surgeon named Regis Haid and his wife encountered a booth showcasing these extraordinary dogs. Initially dismissing the hefty price, curiosity led them to visit Svalinn’s training facility. They were soon won over by the dogs' remarkable intelligence and capabilities. Today, the Haid family owns two Svalinn dogs, fully immersed in the lifestyle that accompanies such a unique pet.

Kim Greene, the founder of Svalinn, wasn’t always destined for the luxury dog business. Greene, along with her then-husband Jeff, a former Green Beret, began her journey in Nairobi amid the city's carjacking problems. Seeking protection, they initially turned to Rhodesian ridgebacks and later evolved their interest towards tactical K-9s following the high-profile raid involving a Belgian Malinois named Cairo. Returning to the U.S. in 2013, they established Svalinn, aiming to create dogs that could both fiercely protect and seamlessly blend into family life.

Established within the expansive Montana landscape, Svalinn’s training methods are rigorous and meticulous. Each dog undergoes extensive training spanning two to three years, and only about 20 dogs are sold every year. The dogs are a mix of Dutch Shepherds, German Shepherds, and Belgian Malinois, bred and trained to perform under extreme conditions. The facility even boasts an exercise area called the Phoenix, specifically designed to challenge the dogs’ physical and mental capabilities.

Despite their rugged training, these dogs are not just about brute strength. Much of their training focuses on developing ‘stability’—a blend of calm temperament, elite control, and solid physical balance. The result is a pet that is as capable of disarming an assailant as it is of gently nuzzling a child's hand.

Individuals interested in acquiring a Svalinn dog go through a stringent vetting process. One notable buyer, Stephen Mazzola, an airline pilot who once flew F-16s, vividly recalls his first encounter with Svalinn. After reading about them, he scheduled a visit and soon found himself enamored with one particular dog, Jet. His awe only grew as he witnessed Jet’s protective instincts and training in action.

The clientele for these dogs includes a spectrum of affluent individuals, from private equity moguls to celebrities like Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, who appreciate both the security and companionship these dogs offer. However, owning such a dog isn’t just about the purchase. New owners receive ongoing support, including visits from Svalinn handlers to ensure continued training and guide the owners.

The rise in Svalinn's popularity also reflects broader societal trends. As pet ownership evolves, these dogs symbolize not just a companionship but also a status marker and a reflection of their owner's lifestyle. Amid the cultural battles over dog training methods, Svalinn's approach leans towards 'aversive' training, blending strict discipline with an acceptance of natural selection principles.

Svalinn dogs are trained to be discerning protectors. In training exercises, these dogs are conditioned to switch from fierce to friendly in a heartbeat, ensuring they are safe around family yet lethal if needed. Such training often involves simulations where trainers, wearing bite suits, act as intruders. These intense sessions ensure that the dogs are battle-ready while maintaining an ‘off’ switch when commanded.

Kim Greene’s methods might be unconventional, and her principles of minimal human intervention during early puppy life starkly contrast with mainstream approaches. She firmly believes in the strength that comes from a natural upbringing, which significantly shapes the dogs' aggressive yet balanced behavior.

The most compelling aspect of a Svalinn dog lies in this balance—between raw power and affectionate loyalty. For the ultra-wealthy, these dogs are more than just pets; they are highly-trained companions who provide unparalleled peace of mind, whether lounging in a lavish Montana estate or aiding in high-security settings.

In their core, these dogs embody a synthesis of luxury, security, and companionship, standing as living symbols of their owner’s elite status and refined tastes. For those able to afford it, the investment in a Svalinn dog is about finding that rare blend of unwavering loyalty and formidable protection.

Perhaps the best testimony comes from Greene herself, who says, “We’re buying into support and troubleshooting, and backstopping. We’re on the phone anytime you need us. It’s like all of a sudden you’ve got a trip to Australia—we can be at your doorstep to collect your animal and redeliver it two weeks later.” For many, this service is as much a part of the allure as the dogs themselves.
