IRS Sending $1,400 Stimulus Payments To One Million Taxpayers

One million Americans are set to receive unclaimed stimulus payments as part of IRS outreach efforts.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is set to distribute automatic payments to roughly one million taxpayers who overlooked claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns. This initiative signifies the IRS's commitment to reach out to individuals who, for various reasons, did not receive the full amount of federal stimulus checks during the pandemic, totalling around $2.4 billion.

IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel remarked, "These payments are an example of our commitment to go the extra mile for taxpayers," emphasizing the effort to assist those eligible without compelling them to navigate complicated processes for recovery.

The checks potentially amounting to $1,400 will be automatically sent later this month, with most recipients expected to see funds by late January 2025. Eligible taxpayers include those who filed their 2021 tax returns but either failed to complete the Recovery Rebate Credit section or made errors when doing so.

According to IRS data, about one million people inadvertently missed claiming this credit, which is intended for individuals who did not receive all or any of the three rounds of stimulus payments issued during the pandemic. The first part of the stimulus checks, valued at $1,200, was distributed under the Trump administration, followed by $600 and $1,400 payments under the Biden administration.

Werfel explained, "Looking at our internal data, we realized these taxpayers overlooked claiming this complex credit when they were actually eligible. To minimize headaches and get this money to eligible taxpayers, we’re making these payments automatic, meaning these people will not be required to go through the extensive process of filing an amended return to receive it." This approach aims to simplify how individuals receive their entitled funds.

The payments will be distributed either via direct deposit to the bank accounts on file from individual 2023 tax returns or mailed as paper checks to existing addresses if bank details are not available. Taxpayers whose bank accounts have since closed will receive their payments through checks mailed to the address the IRS has on record.

Importantly, individuals who haven’t filed a 2021 tax return may still be eligible for these funds, but they must file their return by April 15, 2025, to qualify for the Recovery Rebate Credit and any additional refunds owed.

The structuring of these payments signifies the IRS’s effort not only to rectify past oversights but to reinforce the importance of communicating with and aiding taxpayers from all backgrounds. Recipients can expect to receive notification letters explaining the payments, adding clarity amid potential confusion.

The Recovery Rebate Credit emerged during the pandemic, allowing eligible taxpayers who missed previous payments or who received less than the total payments due to varying factors to claim additional financial support. Overall, the IRS is expected to issue approximately $2.4 billion for these unclaimed payments, representing significant assistance for many taxpayers.

For those wondering if they will receive the payments, the IRS recommends checking their tax filing status and reviewing any correspondence relating to their eligibility for the Recovery Rebate Credit. The agency has made resources available on its website to provide information about payment eligibility and amounts.

Clearly, this outreach by the IRS reflects the agency's proactive approach to ensuring many Americans receive the assistance they are entitled to during challenging times. By automatically sending these payments, the agency hopes to alleviate some of the financial burdens many households have faced as the pandemic continues to impact everyday life. The arrival of these funds could serve as welcome relief for countless individuals facing economic difficulties.

With all the details now laid out, eligible taxpayers can look forward to receiving either direct deposits or checks from the IRS soon, representing another chapter of government assistance aimed to support those who've been hit hardest. If you believe you're among those owed these funds, now is the time to check your tax records and prepare to welcome this unexpected financial aid.
