Irkutsk Residents Choose Name For Ecological Trail

Community invited to vote on names reflecting local biodiversity before April 10 deadline.

Residents of Irkutsk are being invited to participate in an online vote for the name of a newly planned ecological trail on the specially protected natural territory known as "Ptichya Gavan" (Bird Harbor). This initiative aims to engage the local community and promote the rich biodiversity of the area.

The names submitted for public voting include "Krylatyy marshrut" (Winged Route), "Pernatye prostory" (Feathered Expanses), and the succinct option "Krylataya" (Winged). Voting is available on the "Gosuslugi" portal, and it will remain open until April 10, 2025. This opportunity to participate is limited to citizens of the Russian Federation who possess verified accounts on the voting platform and are registered residents of Irkutsk.

Valentina Safonova, the Deputy Head of the Department for Environmental Protection of the City Administration, highlighted the ecological significance of Ptichya Gavan, noting, "Ptichya Gavan is valuable due to its rich species diversity of birds." The area is noted for its unique wetlands, which are not found anywhere else throughout southern Baikal, making it particularly special.

According to Safonova, "There are no other such valuable wetland habitats in the southern Baikal region." She also mentioned how certain bird species exclusively nest within the borders of the Irkutsk region, underscoring the natural heritage of the area.

The plans for the ecological trail will enable local residents and visitors to engage more deeply with the environment. The city administration has outlined intentions to facilitate guided excursions through Ptichya Gavan, providing opportunities for birdwatching and enhancing public awareness of the unique ecosystems present there. "This will allow conducting excursions, observing the life of birds, and expand the horizons of Irkutsk residents and city guests," added Safonova.

This voting initiative not only invites residents to contribute to the naming process but also reaffirms the city’s commitment to environmental protection and education. The construction of the ecological trail is expected to be completed soon after the naming process concludes, ushering the path toward increased exploration and appreciation of Irkutsk's natural beauty.

The community is encouraged to participate actively before the deadline on April 10 to help choose the name of the trail, which promises to become an important part of Irkutsk’s ecological and educational offerings.
