Iran Stands Firm On Nuclear Talks With US

Tehran emphasizes unwavering redlines as negotiations resume in Oman

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s redlines in indirect talks with the United States regarding its nuclear program remain firm and unchanged, according to Fatemeh Mohajerani, the spokesperson for the Iranian administration. During a press briefing on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, in Tehran, Mohajerani emphasized that Iran will only engage in negotiations that pertain to nuclear issues, asserting that the country has maintained its positions for the past 20 years.

"The Islamic Republic’s redlines have remained unchanged for the past 20 years," Mohajerani stated, reiterating Iran's commitment to pursuing nuclear energy for peaceful applications. She underscored that the Iranian nation has the right to acquire nuclear energy, a point that has been a cornerstone of Tehran’s diplomatic stance.

Mohajerani also indicated that Iran is open to continuing negotiations mediated by Oman, stating, "We have no objections to continuing the negotiations." Currently, the next round of talks is anticipated to be scheduled by Oman’s foreign minister, as Tehran awaits further developments. The fourth round of talks, originally planned for May 3, 2025, was postponed due to logistical reasons.

In a related development, Iran’s state-affiliated Nournews agency reported that the fourth round of negotiations between Iran and the United States is set to take place on Sunday, May 11, 2025, in Muscat, Oman. Since April 12, 2025, the two nations have held three rounds of discussions aimed at addressing Tehran’s nuclear program.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed support for a fair nuclear deal between Tehran and Washington. In a conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Putin affirmed Russia's readiness to assist in advancing the dialogue. This comes in the wake of a letter sent by US President Donald Trump to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in March 2025, where he urged negotiations to resolve concerns over Iran's nuclear ambitions while warning of possible military action should diplomacy fail.

Trump’s approach includes a reinstatement of his "maximum pressure" campaign, which reimposed sweeping sanctions on Iran following Washington’s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). This agreement had previously offered sanctions relief in exchange for restrictions on Iran’s nuclear activities.

In her briefing, Mohajerani also addressed the impact of the US embargo on Iran, describing the unilateral sanctions as illegal and arbitrary. She categorized these measures as examples of economic terrorism and violations of human rights. "These sanctions are contrary to international law," she stated, emphasizing the detrimental effects they have had on the Iranian economy and society.

Furthermore, the spokesperson commented on the recent explosion incident at Shahid Rajaee Port, announcing that a committee has been established to investigate the causes of the explosion. This committee aims to prevent similar accidents in the future and ensure that the rights of affected individuals are upheld.

Amidst ongoing negotiations and international scrutiny, Mohajerani also acknowledged the energy imbalances and power outages affecting the nation. She apologized to the Iranian people for the disruptions and highlighted the administration’s efforts to increase generation capacity in both thermal and renewable energy sectors. "We are committed to addressing these issues and improving energy supply for our citizens," she remarked.

The backdrop of these diplomatic efforts is a complex interplay of international relations, where the stakes are high for both Iran and the United States. As the negotiations continue, the world watches closely, hoping for a resolution that could stabilize the region and address nuclear proliferation concerns.

As the upcoming talks in Muscat approach, the sentiment among Iranian officials remains cautiously optimistic. Mohajerani’s remarks reflect a steadfast commitment to Iran’s nuclear rights while simultaneously expressing a willingness to engage in dialogue. The outcome of these negotiations could have far-reaching implications, not only for Iran and the United States but for global security as a whole.
