IPL 2025 Set To Kick Off With New Rules And Exciting Teams

The tournament begins March 22, featuring KKR vs. RCB with groundbreaking rule changes enhancing gameplay.

The 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to captivate cricket fans worldwide, kicking off on March 22, 2025. Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in a highly anticipated opening match at the historic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This year's tournament promises not only thrilling cricket but also significant changes that could reshape the game.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced three key rule changes for the 2025 season, aimed at enhancing the overall viewing experience. Unique to this season, bowlers are once again allowed to use saliva to shine the ball. This decision reverses the saliva ban established during the COVID-19 pandemic and was made after a majority consensus among IPL captains during a recent meeting held in Mumbai.

Another adjustment involves the introduction of a fresh ball starting from the 11th over in the second innings of evening matches, if the umpires consider the dew factor significant. This rule, aimed at countering the challenges posed by dew on the field, will not apply to afternoon games that start at 3:30 PM IST. Additionally, the Decision Review System (DRS) has been expanded to include height-based wides and off-side wides, enhancing fairness in umpiring decisions.

While the Impact Player rule, which allows teams to field 12 players instead of the traditional 11, will remain in place for at least two more seasons despite criticisms about limiting the growth of all-rounders, the BCCI's decision seems to reflect a broader strategy to adapt to current trends in T20 cricket.

As IPL 2025 unfolds, all eyes will be on RCB as they take the field under the new leadership of Rajat Patidar. Elevated to captaincy from the role previously held by Faf du Plessis, Patidar faces the daunting challenge of orchestrating a turnaround for a franchise that has tasted substantial success in past seasons but is still seeking its first IPL title. Known for its high-paced action, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium has historically posed issues for RCB, particularly with its short boundaries, making their home matches unpredictable.

Patidar’s squad boasts a roster filled with talent, including stalwart Virat Kohli, who has consistently been a key player for RCB. Alongside Kohli, the batting unit has a distinct English flavour, featuring players like Phil Salt and Liam Livingstone. Their combined experience in international T20 competitions could prove pivotal as the team aims to break its title drought.

The season will kick off with a grand opening ceremony, featuring performances by celebrated artists such as Shreya Ghoshal, Karan Ahuja, and Disha Patani. This 35-minute display will precede the first match, starting at 6 PM IST, and promises to be a spectacular start to the season.

Fans can catch all the action through live broadcasts on the Star Sports Network and streaming on JioHotstar, ensuring they won't miss a moment of the exhilarating matches spread across 13 venues—from Kolkata's Eden Gardens to Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, among others. With a total of 74 matches scheduled until May 25, including a gripping final at Eden Gardens, excitement is at an all-time high.

The league will commence with the match-up between KKR and RCB, setting the stage for a competitive season filled with fiery rivalries and astonishing performances. As teams vie for the coveted IPL trophy, the combination of seasoned players and dynamic newcomers is poised to usher in a fresh chapter in IPL history.

As the tournament runs through to May 25, it remains to be seen how new regulations and team dynamics will impact the gameplay. However, one thing is for sure: IPL 2025 is shaping to be an unforgettable chapter in the storied history of this beloved T20 league.
